SPECIAL PBTS NOTE
With the advent of May, gardening season is getting into full swing for much of the Northern Hemisphere while the Southern winds down to fall and winter. Read, enjoy, follow and SHARE this information with your gardening friends.
Encourage them to visit and follow the page, which is totally FREE. Trying to follow PBTS can make your good garden better simply by offering information on when to plant.
All times given are EDT and I am writing in USDA Planting Zone 7a. Please adjust time and zone for your location.
While the danger of frost and/or freezing weather is almost over here in 7a, I remind you this is statistical, which means chances are it won’t, but it could. And for zones further north, the danger will pass more slowly. For those further south, it’s over – and for some has been for a while.
Simply adjust for your location, that’s all I can say.
Pay attention to the weather forecast and your own common sense.
The only other caution is to avoid planting in wet ground, especially in the in-ground garden where dirt is the primary – if not only – medium. No matter what the moon phase or sign, don’t plant in wet ground or you will pay the price all summer.
If you are planting in a greenhouse or other protected area, information on phases and signs applies just as if you were planting outside. In short, wherever you are seeding, transplanting - planting in any way – the signs and moon phases apply.
Don’t plant anything when either of the killing signs, Aries or Leo, is in force or veggies when the flowering signs Virgo and Libra rule since they are bloom days.
Planting when the fertile signs rule is a viable alternative to the VERY fertile signs, which are Scorpio, Pisces, Ta**us, and Cancer. The fertile ones – just a little below VERY fertile - are Sagittarius, Capricorn, and Aquarius.
If you can utilize only one aspect of the system for planting, I would suggest going with the moon phases, but still completely avoid the killing signs Aries and Leo and the flowering signs Virgo and Libra for anything but flowers.
MAY OVERVIEW
MOON PHASES: May began with a change in the moon phase as it light to dark at 1:23 p.m.
The dark moon for below-grounders remains in force until 4:01 p.m. on May 16 when the light moon returns. It remains until 4:45 a.m. on May 31.
When the light moon is in force, plant above-ground producers and it’s below-ground producers when the dark moon rules.
THE SIGNS: Check to see if the moon is in the light or dark phase (information here and on most any calendar) before planting anywhere, or other moon-related activities.
May has it all – plus two full moons - so let’s go!
VERY FERTILE DAYS: Scorpio/secrets, May 1-2, 28-30. May 1 until 1:23 p.m., above-grounders, then below-grounders; May 2, below-grounders; May 28-30, above-grounders; Pisces/feet, May 11-12, below-grounders; Ta**us/neck, May 15-16, below-grounders until 4:01 p.m., May 16; Cancer/breast, May 19-20, above-grounders. There are 11 days in May ruled by the VERY fertile signs – more than a third of the month!
FERTILE DAYS: Sagittarius/thighs, May 3-5, 31; Capricorn/knees, May 6-7; and Aquarius/legs, May 8-10. There are nine days in May ruled by these three signs; all with the dark moon in force for below-grounders.
KILLING DAYS: Aries/head, May 13-14; Leo/heart, May 21-22. No planting anywhere on Leo or Aries days. There are four days – the minimum - ruled by the killing signs in May. Use these days to clean up last year’s garden if you haven’t; cultivate; clean out fence rows; irradicate weeds – anything but seeding or transplanting.
PEA/BEAN DAYS: Gemini/arms days, May 17-18. The moon is in the light phase these days making them perfect for southern peas or beans!
FLOWERING DAYS: Virgo/bowels, May 23-25; Libra/reins, May 26-27. Flowers only, no veggies since these are bloom days. There are five days in May ruled by the flowering signs.
MAKING CHANGES: There are 10 perfect days for making changes again this month – May 3-12 – when the moon is in the dark phase and the signs are moving out of the body beyond anything that functions or “below the belt,” thighs through feet/Sagittarius through Pisces.
Here are some of the most popular ones: stopping smoking, starting a diet or exercise program, weaning small animals or children, scheduling elective surgery (not emergency!) or dental work. “Changes” are doing anything differently than the way you are doing it now.
POURING GRAVEL: If you have gravel to pour on a drive or road on your farm, do that while the light moon rules, which is May 17-30.
Don’t pour or spread May 2-16 with the moon in the dark phase. You don’t want that gravel or those stones on a path sinking in the dark phase.
