Autumn Lawn Restoration | Over-seeding & Soil Restoration

Over-seeding your lawn is always a great idea. Introducing new grass to your lawn every year will keep your turf looking thick, green and healthy. The best time to overseed cool-season lawns is the fall. The warm soil temps from summer coupled with cooler daytime and nighttime temperatures makes the perfect environment for new grass seeds to germinate and thrive.

What goes on in the soil during winter?

https://lincolnlandscapinginc.com/winter-soil/

Winter has arrived, which once again brings to mind how as a young boy I’d be looking out the kitchen window at the now barren landscape wondering what goes on in the soil over the winter? Eventually I’d end up outside with a shovel, but all I ever got was a sore foot from trying to drive the shovel deeper to see what I could find.

After the first snowfall, the soil lies beneath, frozen in a rock-like crust. At first glance it seems lifeless and barren; but millions upon millions of micro-organisms are there, all eager to provide a buffet of nutrients once warm weather returns. Understanding this replenishing process of Mother Nature that occurs deep in the winter garden soil helps us to grasp why our fall gardening practices are so vital.

Thinking about a pollinator garden for next year. Consider Butterfly W**d - Asclepias tuberosa

Butterfly w**d is a milkw**d plant that attracts butterflies to the garden with its clusters of bright orange-to-yellow blooms rich with nectar and pollen. This clump-forming perennial grows two feet tall from tuberous roots with glossy green, lance-shaped leaves.

Treating Root Collar Disorder - Sustainable LandCare

Trees play a significant role in our environment, not only in creating beautiful landscapes but in helping maintain the health of our planet. Proper tree care is essential for maintaining their role in our ecosystem and to keep your yard looking great. They absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas responsible for climate change, and release oxygen into the atmosphere. This process helps mitigate the effects of global warming and provides us with cleaner, healthier air for. They also contribute to our diverse eco-systems by providing habitats and food for various wildlife species. They act as natural air filters, trapping pollutants and improving air quality.

The root collar of a tree can be defined as an area of the lower trunk that transitions from trunk tissue to root tissue. It is typically associated with the basal flare, or the trunk flare of the tree, which is the wider portion of trunk that insects the ground. Healthy tree trunks typically have a well-defined trunk flare at the ground level. However, many urban trees don’t have an identifiable trunk flare at the soil surface. If your tree looks like a telephone pole going into the ground, the root collar has been buried for one reason or another. Many times, the tree was inadvertently planted too deep to begin with. In other instances, the trunk flare may have been buried after planting. This commonly occurs from soil grading associated with constructions projects, but more than often is the result of over-mulching around the base of the tree.

Climbing Rose Care - Sustainable LandCare Services (Estate Management)

As part of our organic landcare services, we offer estate property management and maintenance services related to lawn, turf, and landscape. We work with clients to oversee all aspects of their lawn and landscape care throughout the year. From planning, lawn maintenance and trimming, seasonal maintenance, redesign, and systems updating, no rock is left unturned, and clients are reassured that their landscapes will thrive and provide value for years to come.

The following is an example of Climbing Rose Care and proper pruning techniques and practices. These climbing roses have been pruned, shaped, and maintained for 6 straight years now and the images show their growth on the trellises.

Pruning is about more than just looks; proper pruning improves the health of the plants, prevents disease, and encourages better flowering. There are different pruning strategies for different times of the year, but overall the goals are the same – to control shape, to keep the bushes fresh and open, and to allow for better air circulation through the center of the plants.

Organic Land Care Concepts

“What we now know and can show with multiple case studies, is that it is possible to manage a high-quality landscape without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. “

The question of what “organic” actually means can lead to a lot of confusion. Organic land care is not simply about the type of fertilizer or pesticide used on a home landscape. Organic Land Care is a holistic approach to landscaping that improves the natural resources of a site by fostering cycling of resources, promoting ecological balance, and conserving biodiversity; thereby restoring and enhancing biological cycles involving soil microorganisms, plants, and animals. It is based on minimal use of off-site inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony and beauty in urban and suburban landscapes and gardens. Organic, in particular, means landscaping with no synthetic pesticides of any kind (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.) and with no synthetic fertilizers or soil amendments.

Core Concepts
“Do no harm” by protecting the natural elements of a site.

A good example of this is the planting of only native plants within the landscaping and garden beds, an example of which can be found utilizing the link below. A list of native plants native to our climatic growing zone may also be found below. Doing so will attract beneficial insects and pollinators to your property thereby enhancing the eco-system as a whole without the use of pesticides and chemicals.

JUNE IS PERENNIAL GARDENING MONTH - PLANT A POLLINATOR GARDEN

Here's a great idea for a family project involving the children. Gardening with your children is a great way for a child to learn to appreciate both wildlife and plant-life.

Plant a pollinator-friendly garden featuring native plants that attract and provide a habitat for birds, bees, larval and adult forms of butterflies and moths, and other beneficial insects. Not only is it fairly simple to learn the basics, but it also can be a very rewarding and educational experience for any child who has shown an interest in gardening.

You may not always be able to observe pollinators in your garden but they are constantly there, and are working to your advantage. Not only are pollinators, such as bees, wasps, flies, beetles, butterflies, moths, bats, and hummingbirds an important part of the natural environment, but they also benefit us by their services to plants.

Here's a list of great native perennials to get you started:

Celebrate and Practice Earth Day - It’s The Only Home We Have

Earth Day, on April 22nd, is an annual celebration that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earths natural resources for future generations.

By using sustainable landscaping practices, you can still design an attractive landscape that is functional, low maintenance, cost efficient and environmentally friendly. A sustainable landscape finds balance with the local climate; reduces inputs such as chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and pesticides; and promotes energy and water management for a healthier environment that can help improve both air and water quality.

When you think of your garden beds do you yearn for a garden requiring less maintenance and water? A garden with a more diverse selection of wildflowers and pollinator plants with a greater biodiversity all the while having a healthier growing soil or growing medium. If so, then ecological gardening may be right for you. In the past, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty. Now they have to support life, sequester carbon, feed pollinators and manage water.

What is Ecological Gardening?

Ecological gardening is the process of growing gardens that are adapted to the ecoregion or climatic growing zone that you live in. In essence you are creating an eco-system and that in itself requires a shift in thinking. In lieu of asking yourself what kind of flowers do I want to plant; ask yourself what kind of plants already want to live here.
