We’re proud to be one of many community partners to bring new life to this historic landmark in Franklin with Old Colony Habitat for Humanity.

The Third Annual Presentation of the Mary C. Morrissey Olsson Historic Preservation Award has been made to Old Colony Habitat for Humanity

The Mary C. Morrissey Olsson Historic Preservation Award was established in 2024 by the Franklin Historical Commission, in honor of former chairperson, Mary Olsson, who passed away in 2024, a tireless advocate for historic preservation, as a non-monetary award to recognize an individual or organization that has made an important contribution to preserving, protecting, or communicating the history of Franklin.

By vote of the Commission, the third such award is being bestowed on Old Colony Habitat for Humanity for its imaginative embrace of historic preservation and adaptive reuse and for shepherding a challenging project to completion, namely the circa 1856 Old South Congregational Meeting House. Donated to the town for use as a museum in the early 1970s, it served in that role until about 20 years ago and has since been vacant. A beautiful landmark was starting to succumb to the effects of time and climate and no one had succeeded in finding a way to properly preserve and reuse the structure.

"Habitat for Humanity found a way and we hope this will be an example to others of what can be done with historic structures with a little imagination and grit," said Historical Commission Chair Alan R. Earls.

The former church is now an affordable, single-family home that will be maintained under a state supervised Historical Preservation Restriction, that will maintain the familiar look of the landmark building, while providing a family with a safe and modern dwelling in which to live. The structure will remain an affordable home in perpetuity.

The Craft Architecture HQ (aka the Williams’ Residence) facelift is nearly complete. A couple items have had to wait because of the weather, but will wrap up soon.

Honestly, I thought Jen was being a little “extra” when she demanded that a garage be part of our project, but with all of the snow this winter, it was such a lifesaver. As usual, she was right.

We’ve also enjoyed hosting in our new living room. Unlike our old living room, we can all to sit together without having to create a human pyramid. We also got a huge new TV that brings me more joy than material things should.

The new mudroom, pantry, and play area have each done their part to help us control the daily chaos of a family of five, so I think that is what has made Jen happiest.

We’re looking forward to enjoying our new porch and patio once the weather warms up.

Craft Architecture HQ (aka the Williams’ Residence) is getting a facelift.

After three years of dogged insistence that we needed more space, I have finally relented. Maybe our kids should have their own rooms before they are done with college. Maybe it would be nice to be able to walk in the door without tripping over shoes and backpacks. Maybe we should have a place to store bikes and outdoor toys so it doesn’t always look like we’re having a yardsale.

I guess we’ll find out!

Dreaming and scheming…

Here are a couple of big projects has been working on this fall that we look forward to seeing built in the new year.

The first is a renovation and addition project in Carver, MA. The proposed design adds a garage, mudroom, pantry, and first-floor primary suite. It also expands the living room and provides an en-suite bathroom to an existing second-floor bedroom. The homeowner will be able to welcome her mother to use the first-floor primary suite now while she remains on the second floor. Then she can age-in-place herself while providing a place for her kids and their families to comfortably stay when they visit.

The proposed design for the second project, located in Hopedale, MA, expands up on an existing single-story home to provide two kids’ bedrooms, a primary suite, and second floor laundry. The first floor will be renovated to provide an open kitchen, dining, and living room, while converting the existing bedrooms to an office and den. Everyone will get their own bedroom, dad can work from home, and the family will have plenty of space to entertain.

In partnership with .llc we designed renovations and additions to transform this building from four choppy apartments to three spacious condos. Expanded third floor dormers, a new rear stair, and reconfigured decks were part of the solution to create value for our developer client.
