The trolley lady took us past beautiful murals, old houses, the entrance to Mark Twain cave, Tom and Huck’s statue, the Riverview Park where black squirrels were turned loose over 100 years ago and then we went to his museum and learned Norman Rockwell illustrated Twain’s books.

The winner of December Yard of the Month for Outdoor Holiday Decorating is the home of Bobby Joe and Ginny Moody on West Cedar Street! This is an historic house constructed in 1889 on a lot that cost one hundred dollars. The pharmacist, Red Duncan who owned Moore’s Drugstore, lived here for many years. One unique feature is a fireplace built from bricks from Franklin’s old ice house! Ginny used garlands of green tied with large red bows over the front door, privacy fence, and their patio. Their Christmas trees’ lights twinkle through the windows. The floodlights illuminate the house with a warm, cheerful glow projecting a classic Christmas card effect! We were privileged to tour their gorgeously decorated home and it was a magical Christmas moment! The best words Bobby Joe and Ginny used to describe their residence of Forty seven years are “It’s Home!” Thank you so much for adding to the beauty of our community!

Our November Yard of the Month winners are Dale and Tina Kelley on Rolling Road Drive in Franklin. Over-the-top fall decorations make this a must-see home! Tina LOVES to decorate for the holidays and her 17 grandchildren love to visit to see them. They were featured previously on the garden club Garden Tour, but with the delightful yard decorations, this is a yard that shines all through the year. Drive by to see all the decorations including a graveyard and jack-o-lantern tree before they are packed up, and then come by again at night to see everything lit up. Thanks, Tina and Dale, for helping to make Franklin a warm and welcoming place to live!

The Franklin-Simpson Garden Club has awarded the October Yard of the Month Award in the category of Residential Gardening – Front Porch Design to Kelly and Jolene Thurman-Bullington on Duers Mill Road in Franklin.
Situated on 1.5 acres of land that has been in the Thurman family for many years, their home is set back from the road, but the Franklin-Simpson Yard of the Month sign at the entrance will let you know that you have arrived at a property that epitomizes country living. A huge front porch invites you to sit in one of the comfy chairs and gaze at the splendor that surrounds you. You will see pumpkins of all shapes, colors, and sizes, gourds, Indian corn, and pots filled with mums and fall décor. Decorated by Ruby Branch Farms, the porch is a delight to the senses. A warm cup of your favorite beverage, a good book, and you may never want to leave!

Homeowners like the Bullingtons highlight what taking pride in your property can do to enhance Simpson County. Whether you live in the country or the city, have a large porch or a small one, anyone could replicate the fall beauty they have created. They welcome visitors to come and look at their piece of heaven!
Nominations for the November Yard of the Month will also be for fall decorations in the yard and porch. The deadline for nominations is October 20. Applications are on Franklin-Simpson Yard of the Month page, hard copies at the Goodnight Library, or call Debbie Wyatt at 270 223-7831 for more information.

The Franklin-Simpson Garden Club has awarded the September Yard of the Month Award in the category of Residential Gardening to Rob and Kristin Wilson on Woodmont Circle in Franklin. They have lived there for 6 years and have made an amazing transformation in their yard.

Climbing out of the car, we were greeted with a loud symphony of cicadas singing high in the towering oak trees. They are a reflection of the vibrant energy and beauty found here. Rob has built circular flower beds filled with flowers around the oak trees and flagpole. The beds are filled with impatiens, iris, coral bells, hostas, and Japanese anemones.

Across the front of the house mountain laurels, roses, and hydrangea bushes are neatly tucked behind pavers. In front of the brick wall that hides the garage is a cluster of swaying elephant ears. The front sidewalk is lined with cheerful looking black-eyed susans.

As Kristin, who is a retired professor, enthusiastically guided us around, the topics of conversation included how beneficial oak trees are for nature, how generous her neighbors are with sharing plants and how gorgeous the spring flowers had been.

A big thanks to the Wilsons for enhancing the beauty of our county.
