If you planted garlic this past fall, you should be seeing it start to sprout by now! Now would be a good time to add a nitrogen rich fertilizer like fish emulsion, or blood meal.
One of the earliest crops we see come to life in our gardens, however the first harvest doesn't happen until June. In June the stem we know as "garlic scapes" are harvested, and in July we harvest the beautiful white bulbs.
We love garlic for many reasons, but here are a few.
1. Planted in the fall, garlic allows us to "font load" some garden labor, freeing up more time for other crops in the spring.
2. Garlic, when properly cured, has an incredibly long shelf life and doesn't require refrigeration.
3. Immune benefits! Garlic is so healthy and a wonderful addition to your home remedies.
4. FLAVOR! Holy moly, is there anything that isn't made better by adding garlic?!
5. Garlic is a simple crop, that takes up very little space, making it a great crop for beginner gardeners.
6. The pungent smell of garlic can help deter garden pests without the use of chemicals. Try interplanting garlic with other crops in beds where you've had high pest pressure.
