Another house brought back to life. 🤎

Finished up a full repaint in Gold City, Kentucky for a customer who recently bought this home — taking it from bold purples and greens to the warm, timeless look of Accessible Beige by Sherwin-Williams.

It’s always amazing watching a space completely change with nothing but hard work, paint, and vision. Room by room the whole feeling of the house softened and brightened up.

Long days, sore hands and knees from climbing ladders, but seeing the final result makes it worth it every single time.

There’s just something satisfying about helping turn somebody’s new house into a place that finally feels like home. 🎨✨

Growing up in the hills of West Virginia, I remember seeing blue glass bottles shining in the sunlight outside old homes and gardens.

Sometimes they were set on fence posts…
Sometimes stuck on the branches of an old tree…
And sometimes hanging where the morning light could pass right through them.

Folks around the mountains didn’t always call it “folk magic.”
Most would just shrug and say it was an old way of keeping a house protected.

The belief was simple.

Spirits and wandering things were drawn to the shine of glass.
The blue bottles would catch them, hold them, and the morning sun would drive them away.

Others said the blue reminded spirits of the sky and water — places they belonged instead of lingering around a home.

Whether someone believed the old stories or not, those bottles became part of the landscape of the mountains.

They turned in the wind.
They caught the light.
And they stood quiet watch over the house and garden.

I still remember how beautiful they looked when the sun hit them just right — glowing deep blue against the green of the hills.

Some traditions aren’t meant to scare people.

They’re just small ways our mountain people tried to keep peace around their homes and families.

And sometimes the old ways still carry a little bit of comfort with them.

There’s just something about banana bread cooling on a rack.

Simple ingredients.
A warm kitchen.
And the smell of brown sugar, butter, and ripe bananas filling the whole house.

Tonight’s batch came out just right.

Two loaves with walnuts…
One plain and soft with nothing but sweet banana flavor…
And one with pecans baked into the top.

Golden crust.
Moist crumb.
Just the kind of bread you slice thick and enjoy with a cup of coffee.

Sometimes the best baking isn’t fancy.

It’s the kind that reminds you of home.

If you’re traveling through, you can find these fresh loaves at Keystop Truck Stop.

Some days the kitchen just smells like sunshine.

Pulled these Lemon Blueberry Breads out of the oven tonight — rich, buttery crumb filled with blueberries, finished with a bright lemon glaze, lemon sugar, and just a touch of gold.

The berries burst while baking and mingle with that fresh lemon… and the whole house smells like spring.

There’s something simple and honest about a good loaf of sweet bread cooling on a rack.

No fancy tricks.
Just good ingredients, patience, and a little love baked into every pan.

These will be headed out fresh — soft crumb, bright citrus, and just enough sweetness to make you reach for another slice.

Sometimes the best things come straight from a warm kitchen and a wooden counter.

In Appalachia, the first forsythia bloom is how you know winter has finally lost its hold on the mountains.

Those bright yellow flowers appear before the trees leaf out, lighting up the hillsides like little lanterns of spring.

I clipped a few branches this morning and brought them inside while Tabby followed close behind. My grandmother used to steep the first blossoms in hot water for a simple spring tea — a quiet way of welcoming the new season.

Around here the mountains always remind us of one thing:

No winter lasts forever. 🌼🐾🔥

Moonlit Orange Crescents 🌙🍊

Buttery orange shortbread shaped like little moons, brushed with a bright citrus glaze and finished with antique gold and pearl dust so they shimmer just a little in the light.

Simple ingredients. Slow baking. A quiet kitchen filled with the scent of orange and warm butter.

Sometimes the most beautiful things are the ones that feel a little old-fashioned… like baking something by hand while the moon rises outside the window.
