A few better photos of the walnut bookcase.
The shelves were set into the sides with dados and the sides sit in shallow rabbets on the top and bottom.
A solid walnut base keeps the bottom shelf up off of the ground.
Finished with Tung Oil Finish left the natural feel of the wood while providing some protection. Hopefully she won't be throwing her books into it from across the room...

The custom solid walnut desk is complete! I am extremely pleased with the final product and can't wait to deliver it today.
It is a two piece setup so it can be adjusted to fit whatever space it's put into. Scroll through to see different setups. In the future I need to plan in some extra time to get better pictures of my finished pieces.

Slowly bringing this custom walnut desk project to a close!
First pic is the larger desk portion, minus the drawer. This was just me setting the top on and was before I did the final sanding and edge treatments.
Second pic is the larger desk portion top finished with Watco danish oil. I glued two pieces with sap wood edges together in the center to make a "golden flame" effect and I kind of want to keep the whole panel now...

With the help of a friend with a drum sander I got the two desktops completely flat and sanded up to 120 grit. I'll hand sand the rest of the way up for final sanding.
Also decided to go with a completely solid walnut drawer box instead of edge banding plywood. I'm glad I did because it looks great. (The drawer face is part of the stretcher to allow continuous grain pattern and will be attached later.)

Glued up one out of two desktops today. Number two will get its turn in the clamps tomorrow.
Also, I have three out of four legs glued up and out of the clamps. The last one needed some TLC on one of the pieces before getting glued up. epoxy is my go to for filling voids of any kind.

First leg of the walnut desk out of the clamps and looking good. Next one in the clamps right now.
Note to self... if you set your glue up vertically for some glue cleanup, make sure your garage door wont hit it when closing. Mini heart attack as the glue up tipped over and fell flat on the bench top. No harm done except for losing a few years off my life.

Laying out the leg pieces and stretchers to see how it looks. Trying to decide on the stretcher depth and I think I like where it is in these photos. A detail that seems minute but really changes the entire piece.
All of the leg glue ups have been milled down to their final sizes and lengths. All they need now is some sanding before assembly.

Going to sharpen the chisels and hand planes using a system demonstrated in a YouTube video recently. A little over $50 for the Scary Sharp kit and it arrived in just a few days. We'll see how it goes!

Got all of the walnut cut to rough length and the majority of it has seen the jointer and planer. It may be time consuming but seeing the grain underneath is very rewarding.
The remaining initial milling will be completed tomorrow and the first round of glue ups will follow.
