The 44th Student-Built Home was a particularly meaningful project for our Founder and Lead Designer.

Having worked on the 37th Student-Built Home as a student, it was incredibly rewarding to return years later as a licensed designer and help guide the home’s design.

Through thoughtful material selections, finish coordination, and collaboration with the construction team, Lead Designer Rebecca helped create a cohesive and functional home while supporting the next generation of skilled trades professionals.

Here’s a little sneak peek of the student designed, student built home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Tonight’s open house showcased the hard work and dedication from the students, their supporters (family, friends, teachers), educators, industry professionals, and even alumni of the Construction Trades Foundation program.

Take a peek behind the design of this row home addition near downtown Frederick.

This kitchen was built around contrast — refined yet industrial, timeless yet functional. The knurled details add a tactile layer of character throughout the space, bringing in a subtle nod to industrial design while elevating the everyday experience of the kitchen. Every finish was selected to feel intentional, grounded, and cohesive to the historical nature of the home.

The concrete-finish countertops bring the raw, organic look of poured concrete, but with the durability and ease of a quartz-based material — giving the space that soft industrial aesthetic without the high maintenance that traditional concrete requires. The kitchen not only feels beautiful, but truly works for everyday living.

Throughout the design, there are quiet references to historical architecture and materials. The brick-like backsplash pays homage to the original (now exposed) brick wall just beyond the island, creating a sense of continuity between the spaces and tying the old-world character of the home into the new design.

Pairing layered textures, warm and cool tones, and carefully considered details, resulted in a kitchen that feels both elevated and cohesive to the remainder of the home.

There are so many details that go into cabinetry.

From initial concept and space planning, to fully drafted shop drawings, to fabrication and final installation… being a certified kitchen and bath designer means I pay attention to those details.

And creating designs in fully custom cabinetry allows for all of your aesthetic and storage goals to be fully imagined.

Take a look through some images of various stages of the cabinetry build process at the custom shop we use. Here you can see how corners come together, dovetail drawer joints, a bench top getting glued together, a finished hood frame, and two finishes on white oak wood cabinet doors.

The Young American 44 home is almost done!

Major progress has been made over the past few weeks — the driveway is complete, exterior lighting is in, and plumbing fixtures have been installed. There are only a few items left on the punchlist!

Be sure to join us on May 26th to tour the house for yourself. Designed by the students in Principles of Architecture and CAD Technology. Built by the students in carpentry, masonry, electricity, plumbing, and HVAC.

Having the opportunity to assist these students and the Board of Directors has truly been a full circle moment for me.

It has been incredibly meaningful to support these students and work alongside the Board of Directors by assisting in the selection of cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, lighting, tile, and flooring. Seeing this project come together has truly been a full-circle moment for me as an alumni of the interior design program of CTF.
