6/12 10:45A: A disaster declaration has been issued by Gillespie County Judge Daniel Jones in support of New World Screwworm incident response and community impacts.

A local disaster declaration allows public officials and agencies to focus on emergency response relating to state and federal screwworm operations and also starts the process for additional state resources and possible recovery resources and support in the future.

Local officials continue to coordinate with lead state and federal response agencies, maintain situational awareness of evolving response, and share information and educational resources to the public.

This is why you never have your grill near your home!

Here are six common sensical grilling tips for Memorial Day Weekend.

1. For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead.

2. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

3. Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

4. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.

5.If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container. This rule also applies to propane grills

6. Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
