Friendly reminder since it's snowing.
If you're getting close to 40, this is something to remember. Some research shows that heavy snowfall increases heart attack admissions in men by 16% and fatalities by 34%.

Risk factors and statistics

High strain: Shoveling can push the heart to exceed recommended exercise intensity limits, and 10 minutes of heavy shoveling can average 97% of the maximum heart rate.
Increased risk in men: Studies have found that men, especially those over 40, are at a higher risk of heart attack from shoveling compared to women.

Cold air effects: Cold weather constricts blood vessels, increasing blood pressure and straining the heart.

Valsalva maneuver: Some people hold their breath while straining, which further increases heart rate and blood pressure.

Pre-existing conditions: Individuals with underlying heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or obesity are at a greater risk.

Underestimated danger: The danger of snow shoveling is often underestimated, with many people unaware of the significant strain it puts on the heart.

How to reduce risk
Warm up: Stretch and warm up before shoveling.

Pace yourself: Take frequent breaks and shovel in short intervals (e.g., 15 minutes).

Use proper form: Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and try to push the snow rather than lifting it whenever possible.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after shoveling.

Dress in layers: Wear layers of clothing that you can remove as you get warmer.

Avoid the "Valsalva maneuver": Don't hold your breath; breathe normally and exhale when you are lifting.

Consider alternatives: Use a snowblower or hire a snow removal service if you are at high risk.
