{THIS IS US} 👋 It’s been awhile since we did an introductory post! We have lots of chickens, plants, and bees to showcase but like to keep you updated on who’s behind the curtains at .🏡
⠀⠀⠀
We (Ryan + Erica) have been in the photography industry for 18 years (our business is Pure7 Studios), married 22, and have 3 awesome teens. We purchased 5 acres on the Emerald Coast of FL in 2019 and built our modern farmhouse 2000-2022 (not great timing but we survived)! We have 4 dogs, 1 cat, 22 chickens + a hive full of bees!! 🐕🐈‍⬛🐓🐝

Ryan miraculously survived a traumatic brain injury on our property beginning of 2020 (shout-out to the amazing specialists at UAB Birmingham where he was life-lighted). You can read his story via link in bio. That hasn’t come without difficulties for our family and learning “a new normal”, but we’re humbly blessed and give glory to God for Ryan’s continued determination & healing. ❤️‍🩹 He resumed work merely months later after learning to speak again! Working on our acreage has also been very healing. We love meeting fellow TBI survivors so please give us a shout! 🧠

We also love connecting with other homesteaders, chicken + beekeepers, home decor enthusiasts, or just anyone following our random musings here! We look forward to connecting with all of you, so if you’re reading this please drop a line and say hello - as the convo w/ the chickens is getting a little dry. 😉

“And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord. So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: We will shew forth thy praise to all generations.”

Allowed the peeps to forage through the remnants of our Fall garden a month ago before we started prepping for Spring & Summer. They were so cute and curious!

Those of you who garden - when are you planting this Spring and what? 🫛🪴👨🏼‍🌾

Growing up, my grandma had a small sign in her kitchen that read: “No matter where I serve my guests, It seems they like my kitchen best.” In memories from childhood, Grandma’s kitchen seemed expansive - enough room for cooking, Christmas Eve’s feast, even the beloved memory of a family dance party to Eva Cassidy’s Live at Blues Alley. As an adult, I later realized her kitchen was relatively small - it’s the larger than life memories in it that are so HUGE. ❤️

While there was a lot of love in the kitchen of our last home of 20 years in Destin, FL, there was NO counter space and the island only sat 3. When planning the vision for our new kitchen, we knew we wanted plenty of countertops for food prep and a large island that sat at least 6 (we’ve added 2 round under-counter barstools on each end). We knew we’d typically be eating & gathering in the kitchen rather than the formal dining room (aka Ping Pong room; see previous post) so this was a huge priority.

We’re blessed to say that it was a dream that came to life! In the less than two years we’ve lived here, we really do dine at the island 95% of the time - even when company comes over. We’ve even had several dance parties in the kitchen, including ON TOP of the island. (We won’t mention names, but one of our kids can really drop it like it’s hot, and we don’t mean the dinner plate.) 🔥💃🏼

Posted this to stories last week, but decided she deserves a spot in the feed. Our Buff Orpingtons are by far our friendliest hens. All 9 of our adult chickens come running when they see us, but the Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rock aren’t quite as submissive with being held as our blonde beauties. Our 14 chicks that were born a little over a month ago are pretty skittish too, so we’ll hope they warm up to mama! I give them lots of love & treats!

Meet our 3 resident Guinea Fowl here at ! Raised as 3-day old chicks from , they’re 6 months old now and full grown. And very noisy! ;)

The darker two are “Purple Guineas” and the light is a “Lavender Guinea”. Why do we have them, you ask? Guinea fowl are known for their unique traits:

- Guineafowl are excellent pest controllers, feeding on insects and ticks.
- They have a distinctive call, sounding like a mix of honks and cackles.
- Guineafowl are highly social
- Guineafowl have a keen sense of danger and act as effective alarm systems on farms.
- Guineafowl eggs have thicker shells than chicken eggs and a unique flavor.
- They are hardy birds, well adapted to different climates.
- Guineafowl can be used to control tick populations in areas prone to tick-borne diseases.
- Domesticated guineafowl are raised for meat, eggs, and their pest control abilities.

Have you had these birds before? Would love to hear about your experiences!

SWIPE ➡️ to see what Ralphie (our 5 year old F1B golden doodle; 3rd of 4 dogs here at the ‘stead) looked like BEFORE he took a romp with his buddy in the neighbor’s muddy ditch (right after he’d been groomed)! 💦🐾

We now have Invisible Fence to keep our pooches safely on our property! 😉

We had the privilege of hosting our extended family of 30+ on Thanksgiving & Christmas this year! We love hosting, because there’s ample space for everyone to spread out and enjoy the outdoors, as well as the recent addition of our pickle ball court! The hens also love the extra love they get when visitors are here as well. 🐓❤️

Pictured is our beautiful niece, Mariah, with one of our Barred Rock hens from our original flock established 9/30/22 (from the amazing Cackle Hatchery)!

Currently learning about doing “mite dips” and how to treat the coop with Permethrin to prevent cockroaches. Any of you chicken people out there have advice in this area? We are learning as much as we can to keep our flock healthy but there’s so much to learn!
