9 AM Monday Tropical Update
Tropical Depression Two remains a lopsided system with wind shear pushing most of the storms over the Gulf waters in the southern half of the circulation. There is a lot of dry air swirling around the center, so only slow strengthening is expected at this time.
That said, new storms are firing near the center, which means this could soon get the upgrade to Tropical Storm Bertha as Hurricane Hunters fly multiple missions through the storm today. The one I’m most interested in will occur this evening with a special plane equipped with a tail Doppler radar that will give us greater insight into the storm structure. When this data is fed into our computer models, it increases the accuracy in track and intensity by a notable percentage.
There are now two main scenarios on the table. The consensus scenario from computer models is that the circulation will move into southeast Louisiana on Wednesday night and fall apart. Under that scenario, the moisture would still head westward into Southeast Texas and bring us some rain Thursday and possibly Friday. The other scenario is that the storm stalls just offshore or near Grand Isle, Louisiana, and then pivots west or southwest towards Texas as a stronger system. Under that scenario, we would have more significant wind and water impacts along the Texas coastline Thursday through Saturday. This is the more unlikely scenario at this time, but because it’s still very early in the development stages when uncertainty remain remains high, we cannot completely discount it.
We should have a new track forecast out from the national hurricane Center by 10 AM with their latest thinking, and our team will keep you updated 24/7 as needed throughout this week as we figure out what impacts, if any, we will have from future Bertha.
