The yellow pear cherry tomatoes are coming in strong! New to my garden this year, but these are an old heirloom variety. They are perfectly sweet and pretty, perfect for snacking or a Summer salad.

Yellow pear tomatoes are indeterminate, which means they grow quite long vines, sometimes up to eight feet! I’ve added them on my arch trellis and hope to enjoy an abundant harvest.

A ginormous Swiss Chard leaf! Been having Swiss chard smoothies for breakfast every morning and it’s been delicious! I love mine with Mango, fresh ginger and a (small) lemon. Sometimes I’ll add in some frozen peaches too.

What’s your favorite way to use up all this gorgeous Swiss chard?

Do you know pinching off your tomato blossoms for about a month after transplant helps establish a very productive plant?

Plucking off all blossoms helps the plant direct it’s energy to a more stronger root system - and we know, all good things start with a good and strong foundation! If blossoms are allowed to set fruit, the plant will direct its energy onto fruit production at the expense of a strong plant that will be able to produce a lot more tomatoes. So go ahead, pluck those blossoms!

The first tulip bloom of the season! 😍😍

My kitchen garden always includes flowers, and this year I decided to try tulips, because they are so fun! Tulips love the same fertile well drained soil as vegetables and are first to bloom - long before it’s time to plant the warmer season veggies.

These bulbs are from .tulips. If you are local, and have not been to their farm, it’s the perfect time to go right now - their flowers are in full bloom and oh so beautiful!

I’m excited to see how this bed turns out, I’d planted about 100 bulbs (4 varieties), some of course didn’t make it, but this one is looking good for sure!

It’s so exciting to see tiny seeds germinating! In the center here we have Sorrel. I tried it last year and only one plant made it big enough for me to try a leaf. I loved it, but it was too warm to get more seeds started. So here I am trying again.

Sorrel is a small edible green plant from the Polygonaceae family. The leaves have a intense lemony tang, very reminiscent of lemon zest. It’s delicious! Here’s hoping more than one plant survives this year!

What are some of the ‘new’ plants you are growing this year?

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with bright (and green!) promises!

It is a beautiful day to be out in the garden and I finally planted some garlic.

It is still going to be fairly warm another two weeks or more this year, and the peppers and tomatoes could have stayed to ripen, but had to make room for Garlic. It’s always bittersweet changing the veggies for the season, but there will be lots of more to look forward to!
