The Trinity Alps is a somewhat lesser known mountain range in the northern part of our state, which means you have a better chance of finding solitude than in its big sister range to the southeast, the Sierra Nevada. The glaciated granitic and peridotite peaks offer an abundance of lakes and a striking diversity of plant species. As a subrange of the Klamath Mountains, plants from the Sierra, Cascade and Coast Ranges all converge here.

We visited the collection of lakes known as Big Bear, Little Bear and Wee Bear, some of the many bear named lakes in the region, not to mention the state!

Despite the stunning landscape, we didn’t see another soul on the trail.
The main down side to hiking this area in the warm season is the heat. Despite the montane appearance, the elevations are much lower than the more southerly Sierra, so they can get quite hot.

The Friday before last, we visited Mount Diablo for a very satisfying hike, both aesthetically and botanically. This high point of the East Bay boasts dramatic topography and an abundance of rare plants, some of which are only found there, while others reach their northern or near northern terminus on the rugged slopes.

We started at Mitchell Canyon, then did a loop going over the various summits: Twin, Eagle, Mount Diablo, North and Olympia.

Our hike this weekend was a little wet, but that didn’t do much to dampen our enjoyment. We visited the north side of Mount Tamalpais, in the areas of Phoenix, Bon Tempe and Lagunitas Lakes. The wildflowers are definitely getting past their prime, but the canyons and forest understories are still verdant and enjoyable.

For a long time, we avoided the area around Deer Park, but it does have an appealing combination of oak woodlands, rocky outcrops, isolated redwoods and open meadows. The down side, and it is a big one, is the massive amount of destructive broom invading the more shaded areas. 😡Some work has been done to remove it over the last few years, but without continued maintenance, masses of seedlings keep returning, blooming and fruiting, adding their seeds to the seedbank in the soil.

We started at Deer Park, hiked over Bald Hill, around Phoenix Lake, and up Tucker and Eldridge Trails before dropping down to Pilot K**b and Pumpkin Trails. Hidden Meadow Tr. took us up to Bald Hill Tr which guided us to a broom infested ridge trail that eventually dropped us back where we started.

Moore Creek in Napa County entices with a lush canyon, surrounded by oak and chaparral studded hillsides. The volcanic and serpentine soils provide ample diversity and striking scenery.

For our Friday hike, the wildflowers were already beginning to fade, offering quite the contrast to last year at this time. The sudden onslaught of hot weather is taking its toll. The butterflies, however, were in rare form, especially the variable checkerspots and the pipevine swallowtails.

The snakes were feisty, having recently awoken from their winter slumber. We had a close encounter with the rattling kind, striking out from the tall grasses in a less traveled area. 🫣🐍

From canyon, to serpentine summit, to sea, and back again! On Friday, we had a beautiful hike in the Mt. Tamalpais area of Marin County. The shaded creek sides were in the full bloom of spring, but the sunnier locales still felt a little wintery, with very few annuals in flower.

We started at the Cataract Falls Trailhead, headed up to the West Peak of Mt. Tam, then dropped down to Stinson Beach via Steep Ravine before heading up Matt Davis and returning down Cataract.
