Are you pressure canning this season? If so, your dial gauge should be checked for accuracy and overall condition each year prior to canning. Over time, as the canner lid is handled, bumped, and used, the calibration of a dial gauge can become inaccurate. Even gauges on new canners and replacement gauges need to be tested before use. Gauges that read high cause under-processing and result in unsafe food. Low readings cause over-processing.

The test is free and only takes a few minutes to complete.

Contact us at 931-268-9437 or by email at [email protected] to have your dial gauge tested.

A hummingbird feeder in direct sun ferments faster than most people expect. Cloudy solution or dark spots inside the ports means the sugar water has turned.

The fix is the recipe and the schedule.

Four parts water. One part white sugar. No red dye — the feeder is already red. No honey — it ferments faster and grows mold. No artificial sweetener — no calories, wasted trips.

Change it every two to three days when temperatures are above 75°F. Daily when it's above 90°F. If the solution is cloudy, it's past due.

- Boil water, dissolve sugar, cool, fill
- Clean the feeder with hot water at every refill — no soap
- Black spots inside the ports need a bottle brush or pipe cleaner
- Place the feeder in shade — direct sun speeds fermentation
- If you can't keep the schedule, take the feeder down — a dirty feeder is worse than no feeder

Four parts water. One part sugar. Every two days. That's the whole system.

Thank you to former Blue Devil, Mr. Dillon Maynard, with TWRA for coming out today and providing the Boater Safety class to Mr. Chaffins Senior Success Class. This was a great experience for all students involved. This group will all be licensed boaters soon. It was a great day at JCHS!!! 💙🤍💙🤍
