As the high winds and storms have likely caused some damage in the area, we just wanted to re-share.
We have an insurance guide posted on the homepage our website, written by a former-teacher and guided by a licensed contractor and public adjuster. If you're noticing wet spots, leaks, or storm damage, take a look at our Insurance Guide to see how to best navigate the process with your best interests in mind.

With this storm causing trouble at our own home here in Nokesville, we wanted to remind our community of some very important facts about insurance claims for your home:
1) You are NOT required to choose or use your insurance company's contractors. In fact, we discourage it. Preferred vendors for the insurance companies have the company's best interests at heart, not yours.
2) You are allowed to choose whatever contractor you prefer, regardless of what they charge. You do not need to collect estimates. Go with somebody who will do it correctly!
3) NEVER have the insurance adjuster out to your property without your contractor present.
4) The guys who come to your door tomorrow are likely stormers using scare tactics. Don't sign anything on the spot. Contact a verifiable local contractor you trust to assess the damage and help you navigate the insurance process.
5) It is illegal for a company to tell you that you need to make a claim. It's also illegal to offer to cover the cost of your deductible. These are big red flags!
6) While it's important to make a claim soon (your insurance carrier will outline that timeframe), don't let anyone pressure you into signing right away. Allow yourself time to make the choice of contractors that is right for you.
