Walker Architects was proud to spend time with Georgia’s campus facilities leaders at Jekyll Island. 2026 was a valuable reminder that campus facilities work is both operational and deeply strategic.

Walker principals Kevin Lackey and Jeff Morrison attended this year’s Annual Meeting and Trade Show on Jekyll Island, where the conversations centered on the real issues shaping Georgia’s educational facilities: capital planning, aging infrastructure, energy performance, modernization, roofing and envelope challenges, adaptive reuse, and how to manage change while campuses remain active. That's the work our clients live every day. Buildings have to operate reliably, support changing programs, and remain flexible enough to serve people well over time.

Thank you to GAPPA and the many facilities leaders, vendors, and partners who shared their time and perspective. Walker Architects was glad to be part of the conversation and to continue learning from the people responsible for keeping Georgia’s campuses moving forward.

Future-ready facilities need flexibility built into the first round of decisions.

Kevin Robert Orr, DMA, Director and Professor at the University of Florida College of the Arts School of Music, described the challenge clearly. Many academic concert halls are planned around one primary use, which leaves every other performance type working around the room.

The UF School of Music is taking a more adaptable approach. The goal is a hall that can support an intimate performance, a multimedia presentation, or an AI-driven research setting without treating any of those uses as an afterthought.

That level of adaptability starts with better questions early in the process: how the space needs to change, how students and faculty will use it, and how the building can support work that may not.

That’s the standard we’re designing to.

The arts are not decorative in higher education. They are foundational to innovation.

On our most recent podcast, Joe Walker sat down with Jennifer Setlow, Interim Dean of the College of the Arts at the University of Florida. They chatted about what it truly takes to modernize music education within a major STEM-focused institution.

Here are a few points that stood out to us:
• Arts education builds the exact skills industries demand: collaboration, adaptability, resilience, and creative problem solving.
• Flexible, technology-enabled concert halls are essential to support diverse ensembles, recordings, and future-forward curriculum.
• AI and entrepreneurship are reshaping music programs and influencing how performance spaces must evolve.

For leaders in higher education, design, and construction, this conversation reinforces why arts facilities deserve strategic investment.

15 years in Gainesville.

We celebrated with the clients and partners who have made the journey possible. Thank you for the trust, collaboration, and shared commitment to creating spaces that matter.

Here’s to the next chapter.

Design decisions only work when you’re clear on what’s actually driving them.

🎯 Campus sustainability goals
💰 Operational cost goals
🎓 Student experience goals
📈 Recruitment and retention
🏗️ Buildings designed to last 50 years, not 20

Listen in as Tracy Steward, BSME, MBA, LEED AP, Fitwell Ambassador, explains why HVAC systems play such a critical role in indoor air quality, comfort, energy use, and long-term performance and why those decisions cannot be made in isolation.

When all stakeholders are at the table and supported through change, campuses get buildings that perform better for students, staff, and the future.

Today, Walker Architects is celebrating 15 years of designing with purpose. Since day one, our work has been guided by a simple belief — architecture should be people-first, adaptive, and deeply connected to the communities it serves.

Our Agile Design philosophy has shaped every project, helping us listen more closely, collaborate more openly, and create spaces that support the real needs of the people who use them.

To our clients, partners, and friends — thank you for your trust and for the meaningful missions you invite us into. Your challenges, insights, and aspirations have helped us grow into the firm we are today.

Here’s to 15 years of impact and to the work ahead.
Thank you for being part of our story.
