Architects’ most fundamental role as professionals is the protection of the health, safety and welfare of the occupants of the buildings we design. Our objectives, in order of importance:

1. Protect human life
2. Protect building integrity and safety
3. Protect property from loss
4. Maintain the regular flow of business

—We protect human life first—
Everything else is secondary.

This is not a political issue - it is the foundation of who we are as professionals. If an architect’s design is not actively working to protect the lives of its inhabitants from foreseeable vulnerabilities, that architect is not doing their job. If an architect’s position on people being shot in their homes in their sleep is that it’s ‘not a professional issue’ that architects must grapple with, that architect is part of the problem.

Architect PSA: Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Like carbon monoxide, it cannot be seen or smelled, and it is -everywhere-.

As buildings become more energy-efficient, they are also more airtight, which makes radon exposure a greater risk in homes and businesses. Fortunately, it is an issue that is relatively easy and inexpensive to solve. It is recommended that a building is tested every two years, since radon concentrations in soils change over time. You can have a licensed home inspector perform a test or you can purchase a device like the one here to monitor over the long term.

Have a happy and healthy July 4th!

Corentium Home by Airthings, our original radon detector. Loved by thousands. Quick on-screen results and long term, reliable radon detection. Measures: radon.

It is indeed unfortunate that property has been destroyed as of late but if we extrapolate the long-accepted priorities of our profession, our personal and collective societal priorities are made crystal clear: the killing of innocent black people must stop.

We protect human life first.
Everything else is secondary.

I am THRILLED to announce that I’ll be rejoining the esteemed faculty at the University of Florida, School of Architecture starting Fall 2019. My sincerest gratitude to Jason Alread, Gary McGill, Robert McCarter, Ken Schwartz, Bettina Weiss and Kevin Wilkinson for your timely and generous work and help to make this a reality.

To all my former students – THANK YOU – your beautiful and timeless work continues to help open doors for me. I cannot wait to get back into the classroom and to finally start working in earnest on the writing and research projects that have been waiting in the wings for too many years.

This means I will be moving back to Gainesville this coming summer. Leaving Highland Park and my beloved community will be bittersweet and I am savoring every moment as I wrap up my active projects here.

Modern architecture is worth preserving! Please take a moment to write to the Orange County Executive Stephen Neuhaus (his contact information is in comments below) to urge him to save this landmark from demolition or disfigurement. Legislators meet on 05 February (next thursday).

Unless legislators in Orange County, N.Y., act quickly, a paragon of midcentury American idealism, designed by Paul Rudolph, will be lost.
