Insulation gets all the credit. Air sealing does a lot of the actual work.

Insulation slows heat transfer. It doesn't stop air from moving through gaps and cracks in the first place. A home can look well-insulated and still feel drafty or inconsistent room to room because of what's happening around it, not in it.

Where air actually gets in and out:
- Can lights, attic hatches, and other ceiling penetrations
- Gaps around plumbing, wiring, and ductwork running through the attic
- Top plates and framing seams that were never sealed during construction

Insulation and air sealing are two different jobs. Doing one without the other usually means the house is still working harder than it should.

This attic still has plenty of insulation in it. That's part of the problem.

Insulation doesn't stop working when it looks empty, it stops working long before that. Once it's compressed, aged, or was never quite enough for the space, it can look full and still barely be doing the job it's supposed to do.

If your upstairs has felt off all summer, "there's a lot of insulation up there" doesn't necessarily mean it's working:

Every attic tells a story before we ever touch it.

This week the crew was in a 1940s Kensington home where the attic hadn't been touched in decades. Compressed, thin in spots, and doing almost none of the job it was originally meant to do.

What the crew found and fixed:
- Original insulation flattened over the years, barely holding any R-value

Your AC has been running all day and the house still feels muggy. That's usually not an AC problem.

Air conditioners cool air, they don't stop it from leaking out. If there are gaps in your attic or unsealed ductwork, the cooled air escapes and humid outside air gets pulled right back in behind it. The AC just keeps running and never catches up.

Signs the building is working against your AC:
- The AC runs most of the day but the house still feels sticky or heavy
