Cold temps call for smart safety — thanks GFD for the reminders!

With the current and upcoming extreme cold weather, the Galena Fire Department would like to remind everyone of some important safety measures to help stay safe.

1. Make sure to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of your home. Many sources of fire and carbon monoxide are more prevalent when temperatures are extremely low.

2. Exercise caution when using space heaters. Keep combustibles clear of all heat sources. Space heaters may also be a source of carbon monoxide.

3. Do not use torches to thaw frozen pipes. Fires can start well after you have finished attempting to thaw the pipes. Consider calling a professional instead.

4. When using a wood stove or wood burning furnace, make sure the chimney is clean to prevent chimney fires. Only burn clean dry wood.

5. If travelling, make sure to have necessary supplies in case of a breakdown or getting stuck. You should have a phone with charger, jumper cables, extra warm clothes or blankets, hat and gloves, hand warmers, and a flashlight.
