The Wallspring renovation journey hasn’t just been physical work — it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. Some days getting through it has meant a full, daily surrender. It’s meant making the effort to stay open with a few people I trust and to pray diligently, even when I’d rather just push through alone.

We live in a world that pulls us toward isolation, especially when things get hard. My nana hand-stitched this piece years ago: “A friend is a gift from God.”

Proverbs 27:17 says it plainly — “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

If you’re in a hard season, my encouragement is simple: open up with a trusted friend. Be vulnerable, even when it’s awkward. You don’t know how God might use your honesty to encourage someone else to keep fighting the good fight. We were created for community.

Five years ago, this house was condemned and headed for demolition. My mom and I spent two years restoring her — every wall, every detail, brought back by hand. She’s the historic home of Beth Slater Whitson, Nashville’s first published songwriter.

Here’s what most people don’t know: Wallspring Estate took a year and a half of waiting before she finally became ours. In that in-between season, we took on Lookaway — another massive 1800s restoration, this time in East Nashville. God used that project to encourage us, teach us, and remind us that His timing is perfect. My mom and I rescued Lookaway and purchased Wallspring, and the two overlapped completely. One couldn’t have happened without the other.
Soon I’ll share the video that puts them side by side — Lookaway and Wallspring — and what waiting on a plan better than mine actually looked like.

This creek is my favorite place at Wallspring to sit still. To pray. To let my nervous system settle before the day gets loud.

There’s something about moving water that reminds me — the Lord doesn’t ask us to stay stuck in what’s behind us. Every morning it’s still moving, still fresh, still new. Not because yesterday didn’t matter, but because He’s not finished.

I don’t come here expecting God to hand me exactly what I ask for. Bold prayer isn’t about getting my way — it’s about aligning my heart with His, and trusting Him with the answer, whatever it looks like.

Here is your sign to find your still place and present your requests, and your heart, to God.

So grateful for a God who gives new beginnings. Who hears us. Who meets us right where we are — even barefoot by a creek in Gallatin at an old 1800’s historic estate.

Have you ever really prayed to God — honestly — about the desires of your heart?
That’s what changed everything for me. This house almost didn’t happen — let me tell you why.
A few years ago I was working a government job I loved. But my family was getting the last of me instead of the first. I was burnt out, running on empty in a way that looked fine but wasn’t.
I went on a retreat with some of my favorite, life-giving women at Pure Hope Ranch — a ministry with the most beautiful rescue story behind it. Kathrine Lee owns and runs the ranch and led the retreat as our mentor. She set aside an afternoon and encouraged us to pray boldly — to be honest with God about what we wanted, then wait, and listen.
So I did. In that stillness I heard three things, clear as anything I’ve heard:
Come home. Be present with your children. This time is fleeting.
I am going to give you a historic property to use for me.
And — you are going to have a baby girl.
It was so specific I couldn’t talk myself out of it.
After that, Kathrine had us stack stones — like Joshua 4, where God had the Israelites stack twelve stones from the Jordan as a memorial, so their children would ask and hear the story of what He’d done.
I didn’t know yet how literal that would become.
A few months later I found out I was pregnant. With a girl. Around that same time I found this property — a foreclosure in Gallatin, Tennessee, sitting there like it had been waiting.
You already know part of what happened next — the auction, the flood, the exact number the bank named without me saying a word.
Every one of those moments was another stone. God doesn’t just speak. He follows through, in His timing, not mine.
This isn’t a formula, though. Praying boldly doesn’t make God a genie in a bottle. It’s bringing Him our honest desires, then asking if they align with His will — staying surrendered even if the answer looks different than we pictured.
For us, it lined up. That won’t always be true for everyone, but the posture matters more than the outcome.

This is where the Wallspring Estate Renovation Journey began…

Five days after having my daughter, I was at an auction bidding on a foreclosed historic home.
Brand new baby in tow. Bidding on a property in Gallatin, Tennessee that I had been praying over and researching the history of for over a year and a half.

During the auction, I got emotional and went over the number we had prayed about — and ended up winning the bid. But it was far more than what we had prayed for. After realizing it… I panicked and backed out.

Later I called my mom — I was sad, hormonal, a complete hot mess. But I knew I couldn’t buy this house at that price, not with how much time and money it takes to restore one of these beauties.

She said — “Meagan, I am praying right now that if you are supposed to have this property, God will make a way — even if it takes an act of God.”

Three months later a flood came.

The buyers who won the auction got scared and walked away.

A few days after that the bank called me.
The man on the phone named a number.

It was the exact number my husband and I had been praying about for over a year.

Not close to it. The exact number. Without me saying a word.

We closed a few months later.

This house was a leap of faith.

It still is.
A labor of love, with great things ahead.

Because who would actually show up to an auction five days postpartum if they didn’t feel like they were being obedient?

She looks like this now — but she didn’t always.

The original guest bath in this 1800s home was an afterthought — a small, deteriorating restroom tacked onto a poorly built addition that had no business being there. We reworked the entire floor plan, carved out a proper jack and jill guest bath, and refused to sacrifice a single original door or piece of millwork in the process.

And that handmade brick hiding behind the walls for over a century? We exposed it and made it the star — because that’s the kind of character you don’t cover up, you celebrate.

We completed this renovation in 2019–2020 and she is still shining bright. The good news? She’s hitting the MLS again and looking for her perfect new owner.

Seek first the kingdom — and watch what He adds.

This porch is where I pray, dream and design. And right now I am dreaming about this front yard.

The first thing coming out is the driveway that cuts right through where the original sidewalk used to be. That never should have happened and we are fixing it.
Then we are recreating the original walkway to the creek and building a green wall along the road to give Wallspring the privacy and presence it deserves.

Bringing back what was here before. That is the part of this work that never gets old.

Can we talk about historic windows for a second?

Because this is one of the most common mistakes I see historic homeowners make — and once it is done it cannot be undone.
Replacing your original windows with vinyl is not an upgrade. It is a loss. And I say that as a licensed interior designer and project manager with eighteen years inside historic homes.

Here is what most people do not realize:
Original historic windows — when properly maintained — are actually comparable in energy efficiency to modern vinyl replacements. The energy savings people expect rarely materialize the way the sales pitch promises.

But the value loss is real and it is immediate. Historic windows are original to the character of your home. They are part of what makes it historically significant. The moment you replace them with vinyl you have changed something that appraisers, preservation boards, and future buyers cannot unsee. And in many cases you have disqualified your home from historic tax credits and preservation programs entirely.
The windows that came with your home were built from old growth timber. Dense, tight grained, moisture resistant wood that you simply cannot buy today. With the right maintenance they will outlast any vinyl window on the market.

SHEhabbers started as me and my mom. Two women who loved old houses and couldn't stop themselves from wanting to save them.
