So they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but honestly I think it should be more like ā€œimitation is the surest way to know that you have job security as a small business ownerā€ because when I say I am NOT cut out for dried/preserved work, I really mean it šŸ˜‚ so in the meantime, consider this an homage to the talents of folks like who are so amazing at what they do and I could never ever have the patience that they have šŸŖ¦šŸ’€
But in all seriousness, I’d been wanting to put this little scene together for a while and all of the pieces recently fell into place after Dave’s death (thanks dude I guess šŸ™„) - I found the cicada that hadn’t survived its emergence last season and kept it in th freezer until I had the right place for it, the botanicals are a mix of my silica-dried florals and Dave’s (he’d just gotten super into it over his last few months), and I found the little blue glass bottle on one of our last walks together at . I think this is as close as I’d get to a memorial piece, and it’s not perfect, but I feel like he’d approve. Hopefully y’all do too, and remember, leave this sh*t to the professionals and their non-clumsy fingies ✨🌿
If you want to see this piece in person, it’ll be on display at for ’s new group show, ā€œFEELINGSā€ - go check out all the amazing pieces and support one of my favorite little small businesses!

Buckle up y’all, today we are gonna chat about MENTAL HEALTH ✨🌱 (PS, head to the end to see the full before/after!)
Those of you who were at my last workshop got to see this transformation in real time, but for those of you who weren’t this was the state of affairs in my demo terrarium by the time mid-March rolled around. After we left Atlanta early last month to come home to be with our dear friend as he passed, then dropped our dog at the vet for a major surgery a couple of days later, we then dove into providing 24/7 supervisory care for said dog while also balancing grief and continuing to work full time (full time and then some because you know how we small business owners like to roll) with no breaks so far - and a lot of my plants definitely suffered as a result.
ā„ļø The night after Atlanta we got some freeze action, and I made the mistake of assuming that it wouldn’t be dramatic enough to affect my terrariums that I was too worn out to unload, but as you can see from all the melted growth on these poor dudes that was unfortunately not the case. As I continued to get more and more overwhelmed, my little ecosystem suffered because I kept telling myself I’d ā€œget to it tomorrowā€ but never did - finally I had to make a hard pause and remember to take care of the stuff that’s still around and needs help before it was too late. šŸ’€
🌟 Luckily plants are suspiciously resilient, and with a little bit of pruning and fluffing I was able to get this guy nice and clean with minimal effort and my terrarium is now back to it’s old self, enjoying the regular road trips and occasional jostling in transit. šŸ‘€ This is my reminder to y’all to take care of yourselves and the things that are important to you before the damages from the day to day become too much to fix, because life is short and we’re all just doing the best we can. It’s also a reminder that if something happens to your terrarium you are always welcome to bring it to me for a free/low cost facelift, because sh*t happens and that’s okay. šŸ’ššŸŒæ

šŸ“š I thought y’all might enjoy seeing a few of my current favorite ā€œliterrariumsā€ in a more detailed format - it’s hard to do them justice in photos alone, but I’ve made some pretty solid modifications from my previous iterations that I’m real stoked on; especially taking the time to figure out magnetizing the covers so that the books stay shut when you want them to but are easy to open so that you can water or gaze lovingly at the lil terrarium hanging out in there, or just enjoy some of the more interesting details inside each book ✨🌱 sound on for some ambient forest noise + annoying distant sirens + very satisfying magnet closure noises šŸ˜‰

Wow y’all, did I pull myself out of The Big Sadā„¢ļø just long enough to scrabble together some semblance of a calendar? YOU BETCHA 🌱 As always I’m stoked to be slingin’ my wares at a couple of my very favorite markets, but also very nervous about a first time market that I hear is really really cool with a lot of my favorite folks and that I hope I do good at because I am ditching at home all weekend to take care of our pile of animals and make sure Gretchen doesn’t pull the very expensive new metal plate out of her knee by doing dumb dog stuff. Anyways that’s it for today’s overshare, come on out and get lost in the moss for a lil’ bit as a treat because everything is hard right now and we all still need good things. šŸ’•

I wanted to take a break from our regularly scheduled terrarium/art/shenanigans posting to give y’all a bit of an update because a) some of you are already clued in on our situation, but b) some of y’all are not and I wanted to give you the reasons behind our recent radio silence and slow work turnaround times.

Yesterday our extremely dear close friend (let’s be real, he’s chosen family) David Sabio finally took his last breaths and left us to go wander in the trees in a place where we can no longer catch up to him. I’m really sad, but also relieved that he is no longer suffering as much as he was, almost a year after we’d found out his pancreatic cancer came back for round two and barely a week and a half after he told us he was going to quit chemo to give his body a rest for however long he had left, which it turns out wasn’t nearly as long as I’d hoped. As cliche as it sounds, he really personified the concept of ā€œsuper-humanā€, even though he was always too modest to agree. Dave did things every day that I fear the majority of us (myself included) would struggle to accomplish even on our best days; he’d dip out to go snowboard or surf for a weekend, go climb a mountain randomly, ā€œrelocateā€ annoyingly huge rocks from alongside the highway, lug giant logs around, gleefully cut down your Bradford pears or show up to clean your gutters when you didn’t even realize they needed it, all without breaking a sweat. This man loved to cram as much living into every day as he possibly could, and he’d drag you along with him whenever he got the chance (regardless of how reluctant you might be at first).

Not only did Dave break through my stealthily guarded exterior layers to spark up an extremely close friendship with me, but he became a brother to Char that we never thought she’d get to have, a beloved caregiver to our mob of chaotic animals (even Ravioli as much as he would never admit to it), and a permanent fixture in our day to day lives. (Sorry this is so long, but it’s continued in the pinned comment below.) ā¬‡ļø
