“The Float Moved… But The Pump Never Turned On.”

One of the most common problems we find during inspections is a float switch that’s stuck, tangled, or simply worn out.

Your sump pump can be sitting in perfect condition, but if the float can’t move freely, the pump never gets the signal to start. By the time you realize there’s a problem, water may already be on the basement floor.

During every SGS inspection, we check:
• Float switch operation
• Pump activation and shut-off points
• Check valve performance
• Discharge line condition
• Basin condition and sizing

A sump pump isn’t something you want to test during a storm. Make sure it’s ready before the next heavy rain.

Need your system inspected? Send us a few pictures and we’ll point you in the right direction.

The Small Part That Does a Big Job: The Check Valve

One of the most important components of a sump pump system is also one of the most overlooked—the check valve.

Its job is simple: keep the water you’ve already pumped out from flowing back into the pit.

Without a properly functioning check valve:

* Water can drain back into the sump pit after every cycle
* The pump has to work harder and run more often
* Premature pump failure becomes more likely
* Energy costs can increase
* Basement flooding risks go up if the pump can’t keep up during heavy rain

A good check valve helps your pump do its job efficiently and extends the life of the entire system.

At SGS, checking the condition, installation, and operation of the check valve is part of every sump pump inspection. Sometimes a small, inexpensive component can make a huge difference in how well your system protects your home.

Don’t wait for a storm to find out your check valve isn’t doing its job.

When you hear the sump pump is running, everything is working properly. But one of the biggest issues we see is a failed or damaged discharge line causing the system to recycle the same water over and over again.

Here’s what can happen:

• Your sump pump pushes water out of the basement
• The underground discharge line is cracked, disconnected, or clogged
• That water leaks right back into the soil near the foundation
• The groundwater returns back to the sump pit
• Your pump runs constantly trying to keep up

This can lead to:

* Premature pump failure
* Higher electric bills
* Wet basement walls
* Oversaturated soil around the foundation
* Flooding during heavy rain

A sump system is only as good as its discharge setup.

At SGS, part of our inspection process is checking:

* Proper discharge routing
* Signs of underground leaks
* Check valve operation
* Pump cycle frequency
* Drainage around the home

A lot of basement water problems start outside the pit itself.

If your sump pump seems to run nonstop during rainstorms, your system may be recycling water instead of removing it.

Heavy rains expose weak sump systems fast. This basement was experiencing excessive pump cycling and the reason became clear during SGS’s 25-Point Sump System Inspection.

Here’s what SGS found:

• No check valve installed on the discharge line
• Undersized sump pit for the amount of water this basement collects
• No pipe clamps/supports securing the discharge piping
• Open pe*******on where the discharge exits the foundation wall
• Exterior discharge dumping water directly back into the same corner of the home near the gas meters
• Water was essentially recycling back toward the foundation causing the pump to run excessively
• No dedicated electrical circuit present for the sump system

A sump pump is only as good as the system built around it.

Even if the pump itself still operates, poor discharge design, improper installation practices, and electrical concerns can dramatically shorten pump life and increase the risk of basement flooding.

This is exactly why SGS developed our 25-Point Sump System Inspection.

Our inspection process evaluates:

• Pump performance and amperage draw
• Pit sizing and water capacity
• Check valve operation
• Discharge piping condition and routing
• Proper pipe supports and securing
• Foundation pe*******ons and sealing
• Dedicated power supply verification
• Float switch operation
• Exterior drainage conditions
• Backup system recommendations
• Overall system reliability during heavy rainfall

At SGS, we focus on educating homeowners while providing real preventative solutions — not just replacing parts.

Don’t wait until your basement floods during the next storm.

Most homeowners think sump pumps fail without warning — but the truth is your system usually gives signs long before water hits the basement floor.

This picture shows some of the most common reasons sump systems fail:

1. Power failure
2. Stuck float switch
3. Overwhelmed pump during heavy rain
4. Frozen or clogged discharge line
5. Lack of maintenance
6. Old aging equipment
7. Defective components
8. Improper installation

The scary part? Most of these problems go unnoticed until the next major storm.

At SGS, we inspect, test, clean, and educate homeowners on how their system works so you’re not left guessing during an emergency. A properly maintained sump system can be the difference between a dry basement and thousands in water damage.

If your pump hasn’t been checked in years, now is the time.
