Smith Farms

Smith Farms Smith Farms is a family-owned farm located in northeast Guilford County, 6 miles north of Gibsonville. We are open seasonally from April - Oct.

We offer locally grown plants and farm-fresh produce that we raise in our greenhouses and on our family farm. Each spring, our greenhouses are full of plants; ferns, geraniums, hanging baskets, bedding plants and vegetable starter plants, for sale to the public. We also raise our own fruit and vegetable plants from seed that we plant on our family farm. Our field-grown produce offerings change wit

h the seasons. Traditionally, standard crops that grow well in North Carolina include: strawberries, cabbage, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, blueberries, peppers, potatoes, corn, tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, field peas, lima beans, October beans and sweet potatoes! These are available at our various markets which are; our certified roadside stand located at the farm, the Elon Farmers Market, the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market and the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market. We look forward to meeting you and serving you with quality products and friendly customer service!

Farmers take “calculated risks” every day and today isn’t any different! We have young, tender sweet potato plants that NEED to be planted. But it’s too dry for them to survive / thrive without some rain soon! So, after consulting several weather apps and seeing a possibility of rain every day this week, we took the “calculated risk”, to get them in the ground. Now, we wait, and pray that the forecasts are right and bring us some rain! 🤞🏼 and 🙏🏻…… 🍠 🚜

Finally, enough warm days and nights in a row, that our cucumber crop started producing! Cucumber plants are soooo finicky! We plant squash and zucchini many weeks before we ever put a cucumber plant in the ground - they just can't handle cool nights or cold winds! When cucumber plants start producing - you know you've arrived at summertime! We have 2 kinds of cucumbers to choose from - "long / green" or "pickling". When the harvests become more plentiful, we will offer a bulk discount on large quantities, but not at the present time.

There are soooooo many awesome ways to prepare fresh squash in the summer - but this one has been passed down by generations… “tried and true”! So simple, fresh, tasty - and easy!
Boil squash and onions in salted water
Once cooked, drain them in a strainer
Transfer to a baking dish
Sprinkle with favorite spice (s&p, garlic powder, dill - whatever you like)
Top with favorite cheese (American, cheddar, havarti - whatever you like)
Broil until top is browned - YUM!!😋
If all of our squash and zucchini plantings produce - we will have both available at Smith Farms, for the next 16 or so weeks - maybe until late September!
