Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei) is an extreme heat survivor! This gorgeous specimen bloomed in early June and is just finished now. Like the common name states, she is not from the Sonoran Desert. But this plant is drought and heat tolerant AND supports local beneficials like Praying Mantis. Skip the annuals and consider choosing something longer-lived. Enjoy🌼🌞

110+F‼️ during Volunteer shift at Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix so sowing Echinocereus seeds INSIDE the new Ahearn Horticulture Center. You, too, can propagate cactus for your landscape. Insects don’t have the choice to move indoors in extreme heat. They and other creatures rely upon plants for shelter. Respect the desert we live in! 🌵💚

We’re wrapping up this front yard transformation by laying down decomposed granite — a natural ground cover that does more than just look clean. It helps lock in moisture, reduces dust, and makes those breezy desert evenings a little more enjoyable.

This step might not be flashy, but it’s one of the most important for long-term sustainability and performance.

One of my favorite desert natives, Bear Grass (Nolina microcarpa) is the feature for todays 'What's Blooming in May' post! Bear Grass is a great addition for a pollinator friendly garden! Its long, arching leaves create the perfect shelter for lizards, native bees, and other small creatures, offering shade and protection in our arid climate.

In spring, it puts on an extra show: a tall, slender stalk called an inflorescence shoots up, topped with delicate white blooms that draw in pollinators from all around.

It’s low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and adds texture and movement to any desert design — all while supporting the local ecosystem.

🌿 Curious how to add more life to your yard — in every sense of the word?

Did you know you can move a Saguaro, even in May? 🌵

We relocated this Saguaro Gigantea last week, and it’s already settling into its new home. These desert giants are more adaptable than you might think.

"But what about the roots?!" They can be safely pruned during transplant and will regrow in their new spot, especially with proper support and orientation.

While most other plants are best installed in the fall, Saguaro can handle a May move. And once in place, it does more than just look iconic — it provides shelter for lizards, bees, and other desert wildlife. It's the perfect plant for desert orientated yards! 🌞

Ever seen a bee get “pollen drunk”? 🐝🍯

These little visitors are Leafcutter Bees, and they’ve been busy rolling around in this yellow bloom like it’s their favorite happy hour. Unlike honeybees, Leafcutters are solitary, gentle, and incredibly efficient pollinators — making them the perfect guest for your desert garden.

They nest in the ground, which means they’re easy to support (and just as easy to accidentally disrupt). That’s why I always recommend using a broom or rake instead of a blower for yard maintenance — it keeps their habitat safe and thriving.
Leafcutter Bees might be small, but the role they play in a water-wise, ecologically balanced landscape is huge.

When I design landscapes for our Arizona desert, I’m not just thinking about beauty — I’m thinking about balance, sustainability, and resilience.

At Dare To Be Desert, I specialize in desert-adapted, drought-tolerant designs that work with nature, not against it. Every plant I choose can handle the Arizona heat and plays a role — whether it’s conserving water or creating a haven for pollinators like hummingbirds. 🌺🐦

Unlike others who pick plants based on looks alone, I choose intentionally — always with our climate and ecosystem in mind. And as a small local business, I’m able to offer this thoughtful approach at a price that’s fair, with service that’s personal.
If you're ready to transform your yard into something beautiful, functional, and environmentally grounded — let’s grow something together. 🌿
