Chasing the lowest bid will keep you busy. It will not make you successful.
Here’s what nobody tells you when you’re starting out:
The contractors who build lasting businesses aren’t the ones who win every job. They’re the ones who win the right jobs at the right price. There’s a big difference.
What happens when you’re always the cheapest:
You attract the customers who only care about price — and those are the hardest customers to work for. They’ll nickel and dime every change order, question every invoice, and leave you a bad review anyway.
Your margins get thinner every year — material costs go up, labor costs go up, equipment costs go up. But if your reputation is built on being cheap you can’t raise your prices without losing the only thing you were selling.
You can’t reinvest in your business — no new equipment, no better crew, no growth. You’re just grinding to break even.
You burn out your people — running lean crews on thin margins means cutting corners somewhere. Eventually it shows up in the work.
What happens when you stop being the cheapest:
You attract customers who value quality over price. Those customers refer other customers just like them. Your reputation builds on the right foundation.
27 years taught me that the jobs I lost because I was too expensive never kept me up at night. The jobs I won by being too cheap absolutely did.
Price yourself for the business you want to build. Not the business you’re afraid to lose.
