How to Clean an Outside Dryer Vent

When was the last time you walked outside and took a look at the dryer vent cover and how well it is opening on an outside wall of your home? It's probably not on a list of the chores you do regularly, but it should be.

Fires that begin from clothes dryers that are clogged with lint are second only to kitchen fires as the leading cause of home fire damage. Accumulated lint and dust lead the list of why laundry room fires occur, far ahead of wiring problems or other issues. While emptying the dryer lint screen after every load is essential to helping your dryer perform more efficiently and preventing fires, a properly installed and maintained dryer vent system is also key.

Outside dryer vents can become clogged when lint is exposed to outside humidity. Keep air flowing to prevent fires and keep a dryer working properly.

If your washing machine vibrates and seems to dance around, find a solution to help it operate more quietly with less vibration.

Even if you regularly clean your lint trap in the dryer, you might still find that your clothes come back from the laundry room with lint on them. Most likely, if you have an older machine, your washer lint trap is clogged. This can also lead to mold and mildew building up within the machine. To keep the clothes fuzz-free and smelling nice, you need to manually remove the lint from the trap.

Newer high-efficiency washers don't have lint traps, but rather self-cleaning pump filters that get rid of the lint. If you have the latter, simply run an empty wash cycle once a month to get rid of any excess lint that might be lingering in the pump filter.

Dryers aren't the only appliance with a lint trap. If your clothes are coming out of the wash covered in lint and smelling funky, a clogged lint trap might be to blame.
