Full Overlay vs. Partial Overlay

When shopping for cabinets, customers are sometimes confused about the terms full overlay versus partial overlay. Simply stated, an overlay is just how much the cabinet door covers up, or overlays, the faceframe.

Full overlay cabinets have doors and drawer fronts that cover more of the faceframe. Appearance wise, very little of the faceframe is visible when the doors and drawers are closed, as shown in the picture. However, keep in mind that often the door and drawer openings are usually still the same size as a partial overlay cabinet, just with bigger doors and drawer fronts.

Partial overlay cabinets are virtually just the opposite. They have smaller doors and drawer fronts, that only partially cover the faceframe when the doors and drawers are closed. This will leave visble space around and between the doors and drawer fronts, as is demonstrated in the picture.

Current design trends today lean more towards full overlay, and many consider it a more modern and sleeker look. On the flip side, partial overlay is usually considered to be a more traditional style. Most cabinetry today comes standard as full overlay, although some cabinet lines do still offer partial overlay, if that is the customer's preference.
