So after the last storm came through there was alot of obvious tree damage. What many people fail to see are the tree defects that are not obvious but definitely endangering their property. I'm talking weakened crotches with stress cracks and trees that have started to uproot. A yard inspection well identify those issues and we can triage them to tell you what needs immediate treatment to safe guard your property.

This is a Gypsy moth hatchling,a day old. I found them in South Glastonbury near the Portland townline. I use a very selective treatment to spray the entire yard. The treatment will not kill pollinators. Call 860-331-3453 to sign up for spraying. Spraying starts next week (weather depending)

Vines are crushing our trees. Look out your window, chances are good you will see a vine system clinging to your tree. From poison ivy , to bitterswet, to wild grape and more these system will choke off your tree canopy. In the least cut a foot off the bottom of the vine, ideally pull the vine system down. Can't do it on your own then call a tree company/ arborist for help. Selective herbicides like "Crossbow" can kill the entire vine system without harming your trees.

This week I spoke with a client, Sue DeMella of Glastonbury, who went up to the coast of Maine on vacation. Unknowingly she ran into the brown tailed moth caterpillars feeding on the oaks. Her exposed legs caught the barbed tipped caterpillar hairs and the toxin in the hairs caused a horrific rash, "worst than having poison ivy" according to Sue. Her legs are still horribly scared from the rash site. Locals use home remedies to try and mitigate the pain and ìtch with limited success. There is a product that will help alot with the itch and it is found on the internet., the product is a topical cream called DERMA RESCUE by Kinderma Skin Care of Glastonbury,CT.
This caterpillar is working its way down our coast line, it was found last year in Cape Cod.
Spraying Acelepryn will kill it efectively.

The 2018 Gypsy Moth infestation is starting to wind down. I saw a huge upswing in the population in Mansfield,Storres, Andover, and adjoining towns. Hot spots remained in Marlborough, Middletown, and Middle Haddam. We need to watch the reproductive moths to understand what egg masses are put down. I saw alot of infertile masses from last season, I saw alot of predatory wasp feeding, but not alot of soil fungus death.
Next season is not determined yet.

Acelepryn was by far the most responsible and effective chemical control. I used it on my trees and I still see signs it's working.

Amazing, Acelepryn insecticide works incredibly well on leaf eating caterpillars. Used it on my own trees and have watched the caterpillars fall constantly.

At the end of last season, a client called to ask why their arborvitae (cedars) were looking so poorly. I pointed out hundreds of sacks hanging from the needles, which when touched by my finger would wiggle. Those "bags" were the molting stage of the bag worm. These little guys ate the trees bald. A June control spray will keep that from happening. Get your yard inspected and stay on top of these issues, call us.

SiteOne Landscape Supply asked us what the prognosis was for gypsy moth this season. Quickly stated it depends where you are. Some regions had a late season die off of caterpillars so the moth count was really low. Some high population fringe areas are showing egg masses that I am sure are viable. In a nut shell, if you love your trees, make sure they stay alive--get sprayed.
