You've probably seen crape myrtles with the tops of all their branches cut off. "Topping" isn't considered a proper way to prune because it affects the plant's shape (creating more upright sprouts as it grows back), leaves large areas of exposed wood, and can increase future maintenance requirements. Topped crape myrtles also bloom later than others.

If planted in full sun in a location with plenty of room for plant growth, crape myrtle is a low maintenance plant needing little or no maintenance!

Incorrect pruning: topping crape myrtles ruins the natural form of the plant.
Instead: use naturalistic pruning to remove small twigs (or leave unpruned).
