As we move into warmer weather, hydration is going to be super important. Now is a great time to change out water filters. Likely you have one inside your refrigerator that filters water for drinking and ice makers. Some older refrigerators may have an in-line filter installed behind the fridge. Often those filters get overlooked because they are not visible and older refrigerators don’t have electronic filter change reminders. Don’t forget the filters in your Reverse Osmosis unit under the kitchen sink! Those need to be changed annually at the minimum. Need help? Give me a call and we will get your inner camel ready for summer hydration!

No, this isn’t some new horror show featuring psychotic collections of hair. Rather it is an often overlooked home maintenance issue that if left unattended could choke the life out of an appliance. A few months back I noticed my auxiliary freezer making some odd noises. My first thought was “Oh no, I don’t need another big expense right now.” Before running out to price new freezers I thought perhaps this is fixable. My freezer is the kind that has a front tow kick panel. Other types you can only access from the back. I pulled off the toe kick, grabbed a flashlight and looked inside. There I discovered that several dust bunnies had teamed up to become a dust Rhino and were attempting to choke the life out of my freezers circulation fan. That is the fan that pulls air across the cooling coils. The crazy noises emanating from my freezer was the fan desperately trying to stay running while the dust Rhino was working to shut it down.

I grabbed my trusty shop vac, a long soft bristle brush, and a dust mask. After pulling the plug on the freezer…..always a good idea when working around electricity……I began to gently brush the fan and the cooling coils (those are the tubes that house the refrigerant) and used the long attachment for my shop vac to suck up the dust. You want to be gentle while brushing the coils. If you go all Gorilla fi**ed on them they may break and leak and then it’s for sure off to the appliance store you’ll go!

After getting all the dust out I plugged it back in. My fan started right up and was humming a happy tune. I popped the toe kick back in and sighed a sigh of relief. As I was getting ready to put everything away I thought to myself…..”Self, what about the fridge? Could there be dust bunnies under it as well?” Sure enough! They hadn’t mutated to the Rhino stage but they were thinking about it. I dust busted them too! Those two appliances are breathing easier now. I put dust bunny eradication on my annual preventative maintenance list. If you have creatures that shed living in your house you may want to eradicate dust bunnies on a more frequent schedule.

If you have done the sniff test by your trash, in your fridge, and checked that pile of workout clothes with no significant results it may be your garbage disposal that is giving you the stink eye…..nose. I pulled some tips from none other than the house guy Bob Vila. Here ya go!
Step 1
There are two cardinal rules when it comes to cleaning a garbage disposal. The first is always to disconnect the power to the appliance before working on it. The easiest way to cut its power is simply by unplugging it. Normally, it’s plugged in to the wall under the sink. If you can’t locate the outlet, go to the electrical panel in your house and cut electricity to the circuit on which the garbage disposal is powered. To confirm that the power is off, try turning on the garbage disposal.
Next, point a flashlight down the drain to identify objects that may be lodged in, or wound around, the impellers that macerate the solids sent through the disposal. Look for such things as bottle caps, aluminum can pull-tabs, or vegetable fibers. If you find any, remove these items with needle-nose pliers or tongs. Yes, the second rule of cleaning a garbage disposal is never to stick your hand into the chamber.
Step 2
Drop about a dozen ice cubes into the garbage disposal, followed by a half-cup of rock salt. Restore power to the disposal, so that you can turn on the mechanism while running water down the drain. Keep it on for about a minute, until all the built-up grime and gunk has fallen away from the disposal blades. Check the drain with a flashlight again. If the blades are clean, go and shut the power back off.
Step 3
Pour a cup of vinegar and a half-cup of baking soda into the disposal. Let the combination fizz for about 15 minutes. In the process, the acidity of the solution kills bacteria, including salmonella and E. coli. Stick with the natural cleaners here; no toxic chemical should be used. Just as bacteria can come flying out of the disposal, compromising the sanitation of your kitchen sink, so too could a chemical.
Step 4
While the vinegar and baking soda are busy fizzing inside the disposal, combine the two again—this time outside the appliance, on the counter—to create a thick paste. Put some of that paste on an old toothbrush, and use it to scrub down the top and bottom surfaces of the rubber flaps along the neck of the disposal. Those flaps are likely to be as bacteria-ridden as any other component. So while you’re at it, think about giving a good scrubbing to the rubber parts on your sink stopper, too, if there are any.
Step 5
Now’s the time to engineer one final flush of the garbage disposal. First, plug the drain opening. Second, run the water in the sink until its basin is about three-quarters full. Add a teaspoon of dish soap, then finally remove the drain plug, letting the water drain out all while the disposal runs.

Additional Notes
You can add a fresh aroma to the sink and disposal by sending citrus peels through the disposal. And in the future, with regular cleaning of the garbage disposal, you can make sure odors stay away.

If you need a new garbage disposal or prefer someone else to do the cleaning, give me a call!

I’m talking about that mattress!
If you have a double-sided mattress flipping it will prolong its life and your back will thank you! Of course, if you have a built-in pillow top flipping would be counterproductive. Many of those types can be rotated instead. This helps even out the wear. You can check out more info here: https://www.sleepadvisor.org/how-often-should-you-flip-your-mattress
