DID YOU KNOW?
You can grow potatoes from a rooted/sprouted tuber and a bucket of dirt? Here's how:
- Plant the whole potato directly into the ground or a large container
- Bury it 4 to 6 inches deep in loose, well-draining soil with the sprouts pointing upward
- As the plant grows taller, continue adding soil around the base to encourage higher yields.
- Once the stems reach about 6 to 8 inches tall, pile more soil (or mulch) around the lower stems, leaving only the top leaves exposed. Repeat this process as the plant grows to maximize your potato harvest
- Your potatoes will be ready to harvest in 90 to 120 days, depending on the variety. You can harvest "baby" potatoes once the plant flowers, or wait until the foliage turns yellow and dies back for full-sized tubers.
TIPS:
- If the potato is large and has 3 or more distinct sprouts ("eyes"), cut it into chunks. Each chunk must have at least one sprout. Leave cut pieces out to dry for 1 to 2 days to scab over and prevent rot.
- If the potato is small or has only 1-2 sprouts, plant it whole.
- Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Green leafy shoots will emerge from the dirt in 2 to 4 weeks.
I may have forgotten about these guys in my cabinet π ready to stick in the dirt!!
