Calling all native plant lovers! Join us at the Bellevue Botanical Garden this Sunday, March 22nd, at 10 AM for the NPA March Mania Plant Sale. You won’t want to miss the treasures we’ll have on display.

One of our featured favorites is the Siskiyou Lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon). This rock-garden gem features evergreen rosettes of foliage adorned with vibrant, multi-colored blooms. The colors range from the more common pink and white candy stripes to the less common combinations of orange, yellow, and pink. Their showy flowers can last from mid-spring to early fall.

Along with Lewisia, we’ll be bringing a wide variety of native species to help you create a beautiful, habitat-friendly garden. We hope to see you there!

Join us this weekend at the Olympia Farmers Market on Saturday and Sunday, October 11th and 12th. We will be showcasing an interesting native plant, the Umbrella Plant (Darmera peltata). This unique plant blooms before its leaves emerge in the spring, producing tall, leafless stems topped with clusters of pink flowers that rise directly from the ground—quite striking!

After flowering, the large, umbrella-like leaves appear, reaching up to 1 foot in diameter and growing as tall as 3 feet. In the fall, the plant produces a light second bloom, after which the leaves transform into beautiful shades of red and yellow, indicating the onset of winter dormancy.

The Umbrella Plant is commonly found growing near creeks or rivers, as its robust rhizomes are well-adapted to withstand strong currents and flooding. In your garden, be sure to plant this species in areas with consistently moist or wet soil.
