It’s been a while since I’ve made a post, but figured I’d end the week on a good note.

Not every week goes exactly how you plan. We didn’t check every box we set out to, but it was still a solid week. We wrapped up this deck over the past couple weeks and got started on a master bathroom, so we’re moving in the right direction.

This one is a good reminder of how much a project can change a space. The last few photos are what we started with, and the first ones are how it turned out. Same footprint, completely different feel.

Staying ahead and on schedule is a constant battle in this line of work. There are always moving parts, weather, material timing, and a hundred other things that can shift plans. One thing I’ve really been focusing on is improving prep work and scheduling. The more I do this, the more I realize that’s where a lot of the success or stress of a job comes from.

We’ve also been lucky to work with some great homeowners who are understanding and easy to work with, and that makes a big difference.

Always learning, always improving, and working to get a little better every day.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Another one we really appreciate.

This one was a full deck rebuild along with fixing underlying issues that were starting to cause problems.

We replaced failing structure, poured new footings, upgraded the staircase, and handled siding repairs to make sure everything was solid long term, not just looking good on the surface.

Communication and doing things the right way matters on projects like this, especially when you’re tying into an existing home.

If your deck is starting to feel soft, shifting, or just outdated, it’s usually more than just boards. We can take a look and walk you through what actually needs to be done.

We’re booking into summer right now, but can still get you on the schedule.

We truly appreciate reviews like this.

Darrol trusted us with new retaining walls, structural basement wall repair, and porch bracing to correct a slope issue. Projects like this are not just about how something looks. They are about protecting the home and fixing the root problem the right way.

If you are dealing with:

• Failing or leaning retaining walls
• Basement walls starting to bow or give way
• Porches or exterior areas shifting or settling
• Drainage issues around your foundation

We handle those projects.

Retaining walls are something we actively build and replace throughout Southwest Iowa and the Omaha metro. Whether it is structural repair or a full replacement for curb appeal and long term stability, we can take care of it.

If you are unsure whether your wall is cosmetic or structural, reach out. We are happy to take a look and give you an honest opinion.

Thinking about adding a roof over your deck?

Most existing decks were never designed to support roof loads like snow, wind, and uplift. Even solid-feeling decks often need major structural changes or a full rebuild to do it safely.

I put together a quick blog explaining:
• Why most decks cannot support a roof
• What actually makes a covered deck safe
• When rebuilding is the smarter option

If a covered deck is on your wish list, this is worth reading before planning your project.

Covered decks built the right way from the ground up

Adding a roof over a deck sounds simple on the surface. A lot of homeowners think, “The deck is solid, so we can just add posts and a roof later.”In reality, this is one of the most misunderstood parts of deck construction, and it is where a lot of projects fail. 💡 Thursday Home Tip

If you are planning an exterior project this year, do not skip the planning phase.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is choosing materials before understanding how the space will actually be used.

Before you commit, ask yourself:
• Will this area get full sun or shade
• How much maintenance do I realistically want
• Will this space be used daily or only occasionally
• Do I want this to last 5 years or 25+ years

The right material choice upfront can save you thousands in repairs, maintenance, and replacements down the road.

A good contractor should help you think through all of this, not just sell you a product.

If you have questions about decks, siding, windows, or exterior upgrades, feel free to reach out. I am always happy to help.

💧 Water Damage Wednesday 💧

A little backstory.

In 2022, while pushing into more master bathroom remodels, I hired a tile contractor to help me move faster. He insisted on handling shower waterproofing, pans, and floors.

At the time, I had never personally built a full shower system myself.

Instead of slowing down and fully owning that scope, I trusted the wrong person. That decision cost me financially and mentally.

Two bathrooms failed within months.
One was torn out twice and fully refunded.
Another failed due to improper waterproofing and had to be rebuilt.

Later, I learned one of the biggest contributors was material selection. Pre mixed mortar was used in wet areas. Because it activates with water, it never properly cures inside a shower. The failure wasn’t cosmetic. It was built into the system.

That responsibility was mine.

I’ll also be honest. Looking back, I don’t feel great about the projects early on that lacked the prep and planning they deserved. Not every job was bad, but some could have been handled better, and that matters to me.

I have a love hate relationship with bathrooms. When they’re done right, they can completely change how a space feels. But they demand respect. At this point, bathrooms are one of those projects I refuse to let beat me. I know what they take, and I know I can deliver the bathroom homeowners are dreaming of.

The photos here are a good example of why this matters.
This shower was doomed from the beginning. The shower pan wasn’t properly braced, so it shifted every time someone stepped in it. That movement created gaps for water to get past the pan. Once water made it underneath, it had nowhere to go and just sat there. The result was a completely destroyed subfloor that had rotted beyond repair.

We’re correcting it the right way with a new vinyl shower system and a new shower door so this homeowner doesn’t have to deal with this again.

Today, bathrooms look very different for us. I’m more intentional about materials, systems, planning, and communication. I ask more questions upfront and request more information because when we’re working inside someone’s home, trust matters just as much as craftsmanship.

Water damage doesn’t forgive shortcuts.
Homeowners shouldn’t have to pay for learning curves.

Happy Water Damage Wednesday 💧

Reviews like this mean everything to us.

When a homeowner is left mid-remodel and needs help fast, stepping in and doing it right matters. We appreciate Rodney trusting us to finish his master bathroom and for taking the time to leave such a detailed review.

Clear communication, realistic timelines, and quality workmanship are non-negotiables for us. Whether it is a full remodel or stepping in to get a project back on track, our goal is always the same. Do solid work and treat people right.

Thank you again for the kind words and for choosing Greiner Home Improvement.

Today marks three years sober for me.

I don’t share this for attention or sympathy. I share it because clarity matters, especially when you run a business and take on responsibility for other people, their homes, and their trust.

The past few years have taught me how important it is to show up present, make better decisions, and handle stress head on instead of letting it shut me down. Life is still hard. Challenges still come up. The difference now is having a clear mind to deal with them the right way.

That mindset carries directly into how we operate at Greiner Home Improvement. Consistency, accountability, and follow through matter, and I take a lot of pride in continuing to grow personally and professionally.

I’m grateful for the support around me and for the opportunity to keep improving every day.
