"Want to get a jump on the growing season and start your garden seeds indoors? You'll need potting media, containers, seeds, and sources of light and heat. In his column in the spring issue of The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener, MOFGA Crop Specialist Caleb Goossen discusses each in detail. While some gardeners might be dissuaded by the thought of investing in “the best” seedling set up, Goossen advises gardeners to assess what they have at hand. If you don’t have a heat mat to aid in seed germination, you can place a freshly seeded flat on a shelf near the wood stove in your house or on top of your refrigerator. A sunny windowsill may provide all the light your seedlings require (post emergence), or you can hang inexpensive white LED lights a few inches above your plants. Don't want to buy plastic seedling containers? Make your own from repurposed newspaper. "
