In Massachusetts, visiting “Wolf Hollow” makes for one of the most memorable and heartwarming experiences you can have in the state! Located in Ipswich, this wolf sanctuary gives visitors a rare chance to see gray wolves up close while learning why these animals are so important in the wild. Wolf Hollow began in 1988 as the North American Wolf Foundation, and after becoming a state and federally licensed nonprofit, it opened to the public in September of 1990.

Today, the sanctuary continues its mission through education, awareness, and advocacy, helping people better understand wolves as both individual animals and a key part of nature. During a visit, guests watch the resident wolves from safe viewing areas as they move through their enclosure, interact with each other, and show the body language, sounds, and social behavior that make wolf packs so fascinating. Guides share details about wolf communication, family bonds, anatomy, their connection to domestic dogs, and the long history of wolf recovery and protection across North America.

Public tours are offered year-round and usually last about 45 minutes to an hour, with time for questions and a chance to view the enclosures. Wolf Hollow is also a volunteer-supported nonprofit, with donations, memberships, admission, and gift shop sales helping keep its work going. Visitors cannot pet or touch the wolves, but seeing them only a few feet away through the fence, hearing them, and watching how they act as a pack is powerful enough on its own. With its peaceful setting, learning displays, gift shop, fire pit area, seasonal programs, and small group tours, Wolf Hollow is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

This may be one of the most important posts you'll read this summer!

Ticks are everywhere this year, and the diseases they carry can be extremely dangerous. Before heading out for camping, hiking, or outdoor fun, protect yourself and your pets with a simple homemade tick repellent.

For pets: Mix water, white vinegar, and a little vegetable or almond oil in a spray bottle.

For people: Mix 2 cups of white vinegar with 1 cup of water and add a few drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, or citrus essential oil.

Spray before going outdoors and reapply as needed. Most importantly, always check your skin, hair, and pets for ticks after spending time outside.

Please share this post to help spread awareness and keep others safe this summer!

A little yard and deck clearance and weight reduction on this Norway maple before and after pics. We did some property line clearance trimming also that I didn’t get pics of. We definitely reclaimed some space in this customers yard. Just a small trim. Another happy customer.

All three share the same active compound — urushiol — an oil that triggers an allergic reaction in most people on contact. It transfers from plant to skin, skin to tools, tools to skin days later. It stays active on gloves, pruners, and clothing long after contact.

The three to recognize:

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans): the most common of the three and found across almost every US state. Always three leaflets on a single stem — the middle leaflet on a longer stalk than the two side leaflets. Leaflets are pointed, slightly glossy, with a few irregular teeth on the margins. Turns vivid red in fall. Grows as a ground cover, a shrub, or a climbing vine with distinctive hairy aerial roots on trees.

Poison oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum / pubescens): three leaflets with rounded lobed edges resembling oak leaves. Western poison oak is the dominant form west of the Rockies; Atlantic poison oak is found in the Southeast. Often grows as a low shrub at woodland edges and roadsides.

Poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix): less commonly encountered but the most potent of the three. Grows in wetlands, swamps, and boggy areas — not typical dry garden soil. Compound leaves with 7–13 smooth-edged leaflets arranged in pairs along a red stem. Produces clusters of small white-green berries. Harmless staghorn sumac has red berry clusters and toothed leaflets — a useful comparison.

If you touch any of them: wash with soap and cold water immediately, rinse tools separately, and bag the gloves. Do not burn these plants — the smoke carries urushiol and causes severe respiratory reactions. 🍂
