In Massachusetts, visiting “Wolf Hollow” makes for one of the most memorable and heartwarming experiences you can have in the state! Located in Ipswich, this wolf sanctuary gives visitors a rare chance to see gray wolves up close while learning why these animals are so important in the wild. Wolf Hollow began in 1988 as the North American Wolf Foundation, and after becoming a state and federally licensed nonprofit, it opened to the public in September of 1990.
Today, the sanctuary continues its mission through education, awareness, and advocacy, helping people better understand wolves as both individual animals and a key part of nature. During a visit, guests watch the resident wolves from safe viewing areas as they move through their enclosure, interact with each other, and show the body language, sounds, and social behavior that make wolf packs so fascinating. Guides share details about wolf communication, family bonds, anatomy, their connection to domestic dogs, and the long history of wolf recovery and protection across North America.
Public tours are offered year-round and usually last about 45 minutes to an hour, with time for questions and a chance to view the enclosures. Wolf Hollow is also a volunteer-supported nonprofit, with donations, memberships, admission, and gift shop sales helping keep its work going. Visitors cannot pet or touch the wolves, but seeing them only a few feet away through the fence, hearing them, and watching how they act as a pack is powerful enough on its own. With its peaceful setting, learning displays, gift shop, fire pit area, seasonal programs, and small group tours, Wolf Hollow is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.
