Mary Schwalm.
When she’s not out driving her cool convertible, our client is out shooting –
from behind the lens….A sports photographer by trade, Mary chases life.
And captures it in photos.

Mary has an easy way about her, but her fierce force of living life to its fullest is evident at first meet.

When we walked through her beautiful home, it had all the markings of a life well lived. Cozy furniture, family photos, artwork, and an inviting kitchen. And kayaks, bikes, fun cars, and every piece of sports gear imaginable, you name it, she’s got it.
And a sneaker collection that is off the hook.

Mary called us because she needed more space for all her life’s fun accoutrements. She had a two-bay garage. So we made it into three. We stitched it in so well, you wouldn’t know it wasn’t original.

For all her sports, outdoor exercise, and fun, she wished to have an outdoor shower, so we made it.

She wanted a mud room, more storage, an additional bathroom, and an outdoor oasis. Check, check, and check!

Mary Moorby always wanted to live by the sea.
Cape Ann offers nothing but.

Trifles, net zero housing, pottery, cooking, rhubarb crumble, sunny rooms, simplicity, clafoutis, environmental responsibility and the pitter patter of the feet of grandchildren make Mary's house a home.

The home started a tear down cottage, too worn to save.
Space limitations were great, and the desire for open space, king sized bedrooms, roomy and spacious living areas are just the kind of challenges that Craig Herrmann loves to solve.
How to make a small house feel big.

Mary’s philosophy as a minimalist is “don’t have space you won’t use”. She worked closely with Craig, and Bill Elwell & Associates, Inc to make every corner and space have a unique function. “Form follows function”, Mary quotes with a smile as we look around this seaside masterpiece.

Mary shows me a house with an interior right out of the pages of Architectural Digest. She studied architecture in London. It shows. Featuring open, clean space and perfect accoutrements that complement the beauty of the home. She has not missed a thing. And if you met Mary, you’d know, she doesn’t ever miss a detail.

A large inviting kitchen, dining room and living room open to the rays of light welcomed in by sunroom, this area feels enormous and, calls for a large family gathering with room for all. In the spacious sunroom, you can see the gorgeous, environmentally friendly landscape Mary has masterminded.

A well planned symphony of local plants with a purpose - vegetable gardens, native avidities to hide the mechanical and propane tank, eastern red cedars, black elderberry, native roses, purple flowering raspberry, nine bark, vines, honeysuckle, trumpet vine, h**p vine, sweet gums, and bee balms to attract and sustain our local bees. An intentional, thought-out garden.

Challenges, in such a compact area, as many New England lots are, was to keep the house overall size less than 22 x 29 including a garage. With just 600 square feet per floor, it’s so large and inviting, you wouldn’t believe it unless you measured it yourself.

October purchase, March demo, move in Mid-July. 18 months start to finish.

When the owner bought their new house, they didn’t fully know the property’s history. The barn in the backyard is the third oldest barn on record in Essex, MA, still standing today. It was connected to the main house but wasn’t insulated and had no heating source. The bones were good. It was weather tight and had a lot of potential.

The owner is a single dad who likes to entertain. He wanted to keep the old barn feel but wanted a modern space for people to gather and feel comfortable. Adding the loft space was a little tricky, but the contractor did a fabulous job blending new with old.

Here is a kitchen renovation we did in Wenham, MA. The original kitchen was galley style and half the size it is now. By relocating the laundry and powder room to the other side of the house, we were able to open up the kitchen to the dining room. This allowed us to create that gathering space the owner desired, where they could cook and entertain at the same time.
