Democrats claiming that the Trump administration is “coercing” blue states for personal data is absurd. What the administration is actually doing is trying to protect taxpayers from sanctuary states that have either failed to prevent fraud in their SNAP programs or are shielding illegal immigrants who are not eligible for benefits. The federal government funds half of all SNAP spending, and with that comes the right and responsibility to ensure those dollars are being used properly.

This is standard procedure for any federal program. States receiving federal funds are expected to provide accountability. California has already abused Medicaid by using federal money for illegal immigrants, and it’s entirely reasonable to question whether similar abuses are happening in SNAP. Many sanctuary states refusing to share basic program data are raising red flags, not protecting “privacy.” Taxpayers deserve transparency, and the administration is right to demand it.
