While we go into day 3 of a long weekend its past time to be proactive about keeping your pets safe during all the festivities, parades, and fireworks that will be happening! (It will also be very hot and humid!)

As much as you might like to include your fur babies in all the fun this weekend, the best place for them is at home -- cool and safe inside and far away from crowds and loud, scary noises (especially fireworks).

We hope you have a safe, wonderful Fourth of July holiday! Please make sure your pets are wearing a collar with ID tags (with your up-to-date contact information) and have their microchip information close at hand.

Did you know that the Fourth of July is one of the top days of the year when pets run away?

The loud sounds and bright flashes of light from a fireworks show can trigger the “flight, fight, or freeze” effect in animals as they perceive it as a threat or harm.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and calm when the fireworks start!

More pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year! Here’s how to keep your family members safe:

- Make sure ID tags and microchips are secure and updated with current info.

- Keep pets indoors during fireworks and never leave them outside unattended, even in a secure yard.

- Have current, clear photos of your pet on hand, just in case.

- Play music or the tv to help drown out fireworks.

- Coddling a frightened dog reinforces their fear. Instead, try playing games or exercising to distract them.

- Some pets need help to ease the stress of fireworks. Talk to your vet about products and medications that can help!
