Remember those little chicks we hatched earlier this year?🐣🌿

Well, somebody laid their first egg!🥹

Did you know? A hen’s first eggs are often called pullet eggs, and they can be surprisingly tiny compared to the eggs we’re used to seeing at the grocery store! 🥚

Pullets are young hens that have not yet reached full maturity. When they first begin laying, their reproductive systems are still developing, so their eggs are typically much smaller than the eggs they’ll produce later on. As they mature and their laying cycle becomes more established, their eggs gradually increase in size.

You might also notice that those first eggs can have some unusual characteristics. Some may have oddly shaped shells, extra-thick shells, or even no yolk at all! These occasional quirks are generally normal as a young hen’s body adjusts to laying.

Egg size can also depend on the breed, nutrition, age, and individual hen. Most hens begin laying around 18–24 weeks old, although some breeds start earlier or take longer.

From tiny hatchlings to laying their very first eggs, it’s so cool watching them grow!

We just planted another group of Juneberries🙌🏼🍃

These beautiful native North American shrubs produce small, sweet berries with a flavor somewhere between a blueberry, apple, and a cherry.

Serviceberries have a long history as a valuable wild food for Indigenous peoples, and we love the idea of bringing a plant with such a rich connection to the land into our food forest.

Spa day! 🐽🫧

Mud is actually really good for pigs. It helps keep them cool, protects their skin from the sun, and gives them a natural way to care for themselves.

But sometimes that mud gets a little too caked on! Hilda had some thick clay buildup stuck in her curly coat that was making it harder for her to shed properly.

So today she got a little rinse to help loosen everything up and get her coat back in shape.
