Update on the asparagus. They didn’t come out well and had to be torn apart to get out. Sorry everyone. No asparagus to transplant.

Hey All!

Edit!!!!!
The asparagus didn’t come out good so it won’t be able to be transplanted. Sorry all. It was to intermingled and had to be pulled all apart! Thanks for all the replies!

I know it’s not the right time, but I am renovating garden beds that have been neglected and I will be removing asparagus. Anyone want some asparagus crowns? Let me know and i can see how much I have, it will be free as I know there is a chance it won’t take. I need this bed for other things moving forward. Respond to this and I can tell you how much I have in the next few days!

Let's talk locally sourced produce!

Having the orchard makes me think sometimes about what is being applied to produce outside my control. With the FDA approving more and more sprays that are 100% not anything I would want on my food, it makes me even more aware that, as a consumer, I need to ask everyone what they use for their products. Even locally sourced produce can be sprayed with all kinds of herbicides and pesticides.

I will start this conversation!

I use Neem Oil - organic, cold-pressed, mixed with warm water and sprayed in the evening after the bees have gone. I usually spray about every six weeks during the growing season.
Copper Neem Oil fungicide - I use this a few times a season, especially when we have long periods of wet weather, to help control fungus.

I also use regenerative agricultural practices and guilds to help my trees. I plant comfrey, chives, garlic, and herbs that help repel bugs and aromatics around all my trees.

I put up birdhouses each year to attract more purple martins and bluebirds to eat bugs, and owl houses to help control mice and small rodents.
All of this helps build healthy soil and better trees, plants, and finally produce that tastes as good as it is for you!

So, next time you pick up locally grown produce, don't be afraid to ask what they use on their crops!

Let’s talk about Ticks!!

I have heard so much about the awful tick season we are going into this Spring and Summer. After talking with many people, including family I started to think about why I haven’t seen as many, on me or my dog. We spend most days at the Orchard, outside working in the dirt and walking in the grass. Yep, I have picked off a few, but no more than any other year…. Today I realized it might be the neem oil I spray each season (along with a few other habits).😂

Neem Oil is an organic gardeners way to help control bad bugs and organisms that hurt our gardens and trees. I use an organic cold pressed compound you can get at most hardware stores or tractor supply. Mix according to instructions in a sprayer and spray your lawn or garden early evenings ( making sure all the pollinators and most birds are done for their day).

Like any other bug spray it won’t distinguish between good or bad bugs, it will kill bees. That’s why we spray when they aren’t around.

Some other things that I feel help. Search for a natural tick spray, amazon or other nature stores will have it. Ticks don’t like:
Cedarwood, clove, rosemary, mint, lemongrass, eucalyptus, lavender, geranium, garlic, peppermint. I am sure there are lots I missed but this list should get you started.

Feel free to share your tips in the comments!!!!

Wow, the last week has been busy!! New section of Orchard done, approximately 40 plums planted!

Take a look at all the pics. This is a new section of Orchard! Posts are in and fencing is up. Now for planting even more trees!!!

Unfortunately this means we will NOT be open for business this spring, keep an eye out for Late Summer and Fall items. I will keep you all posted here! Happy Planting.

Update: There are currently stacks of pots and trays on our office porch (Apt. 1B -side entrance- of the big white farmhouse at the nursery). I will keep replenishing the piles until we are out of pots!

Local friends, is anyone looking for trays or pots to get your garden started this year? We have LOTS of these that we would love to ge rid of! Each tray holds 32 of these little plant pots, which are perfect for starting veggies or flowers. Last year, I ended up using a bunch for tomatoes, sunflowers, and pumpkins before transplanting them to the garden.

If anyone is interested, please leave a comment, send us an email, or shoot us a message letting us know how may trays you’d like, and we can arrange a porch pickup here at the farm!

Thank you for helping us in our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle wherever we can! 🌱 ♻️ 🌳
