Gravediggaz established a reputation for their dark humor and aggressive, menacing sounds blending hardcore Hip-Hop, gangsta rap, and heavy metal, which helped pioneer the horrorcore subgenre of Hip-Hop. Formed in 1994, the group consisted of Prince Paul, Frukwan, Too Poetic, and RZA, the brainchild largely of Prince Paul, who had earlier collaborated with Frukwan in Stetsasonic.
Their inaugural album, 6 Feet Deep released in August 1994. Each member adopted a Gravedigga persona, RZA as The RZArector, Poetic as The Grym Reaper, Prince Paul as The Undertaker, and Frukwan as The Gatekeeper. They followed up in 1997 with the less comedic and more socially and politically themed album, "The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel", with less involvement from Prince Paul and more contribution from RZA and Wu-Tang affiliates.
In the wake of Poetic's passing in 2001 due to colon cancer, Gravediggaz discussed releasing an album using leftover Poetic material. "Nightmare in A-Minor", the group’s third official album released in 2001, reflected a darker tone with references to Poetic's struggle with cancer and apocalyptic themes tied to the teachings of the Five-Percent Nation. Although RZA wasn't involved, other Wu-Tang Clan affiliates such as 4th Disciple, True Master, Prodigal Sunn, Beretta 9 (Kinetic 9), and Sh**un Assason contributed to the album, primarily produced by Poetic and Frukwan.
Gravediggaz's name symbolized the resurrection of the mentally dead, aiming to bring awareness and understanding. Their lyrical content mixed dark humor, criticisms of the music industry, and elements of horror and violence, influencing the horrorcore genre. The irony in their music also left an impact on other genres, as their lyrics have been sampled in hardcore techno.
This isn't their whole story but we always suggest anyone who's a fan of the culture go read more for themselves. Much respect to Gravediggaz, we appreciate your contributions to Hip-Hop.
