Nyctinasty means plant movement in response to light intensity; or the closing of flowers at night. Which ultimately can help to protect the pollen from dew. Eve caught our purslane demonstrating nyctinasty the other morning, first photographing while they were still "sleeping" and then again after they "woke up," creating a great series of before and afters. Are you growing any other flowers that close up at night, Gardeners? (Thanks for the photos, Eve!)

I've had a request to do some weekly garden task posts, so here you go! This week consider the following:
1. Trim the lower leaves and suckers from your tomato plants. I like to trim up to twelve inches as the plant matures. This helps with airflow and keeps leaves from touching the ground--helping prevent diseases.
2. Replant areas where seeds didn't germinate and areas where pulled cool season crops were. Fast-germinating seeds like green beans work best.
3. Dead-head annual flowers to keep them tidy and blooming.
4. Pull weeds--they are using water that your desired plants need.
5. Mulch your garden to help retain soil moisture. I like to use Soil Pep in my veggie garden, as I can just till it in next spring.
6. Fertilize the heavy feeders in your garden, like these strawberries.
7. Find the time to enjoy all your hard work--cozy up in the shade with a great book and an iced coffee, perhaps?

Something I hear fairly often as customers are checking out is, "I plant these every year, because my mom/dad/grandparent always planted them." I love the history passed down through plants and the sweet nostalgic vibes that come along with it. I always plant portulaca/moss rose because my mom loved them, Happy Trails in particular because she loved Roy Rogers and called her New Mexico homestead "Trails End." Which nostalgic plants are you planting, Gardeners?

Battle of the "Thrillers!" The common recipe for a container is a Thriller (for height), a Filler (for a fluffy middle), and a Spiller (to trail over the edge). Choose your fighter--which Filler would be providing height for your container?! Something classic? Something with flowers? Something out of the ordinary?

Meet Rebel Starfighter Tomato: "A hyperspace treasure in the gardening galaxy, shaped like a tapering heart reminiscent of a starship streaking through space. This cosmic cultivar’s skin dazzles with the colors of an aurora splashed with green, blue, red and black, yet once you slice inside you reveal a rich burgundy-red, colored like a galactic emperor’s robes. This somewhat rare and delicious heirloom bursts with tangy, old-fashioned umami tomato notes" (from the Baker Creek Seed Catalog) Rebel Starfighter and the rest of these limited plantings of vegetables and herbs can be found in our Novelty Nook.

Many of us are having "fun with earwigs" this year--the first photo shows the typical skeletonized damage. Earwigs can be controlled with a variety of broad-spectrum insecticides, leaving a board or other flat object in the area--they'll hid underneath allowing you to kill/capture lots of them at once, or constructing traps: a small container with about 1/4" of soy or tamari sauce in the bottom, topped with just a skim of vegetable oil. Additionally, keep the area surrounding your plants free of plant debris they can hide under.

When particular plants or plant combinations work well, I think I'll remember them the following spring. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't! I made this ring of plant tags, organized by types and planters. I can then use this to find the same or similar plants the following year. I call it my "Secret Garden Decoder Ring" 😊 How do you remember plants that you want to plant again, Gardeners?

Rain a few weeks ago, followed by warm temperatures created perfect condition for fire blight. Fire blight is a bacterial disease mainly affecting pear, apple, and crabapple trees, recognized by black, drooping foliage and flowers, giving the tree a scorched look. Brittany from our Tree Team has been hearing reports of fire blight in the Valley and recommends pruning affected trees back at least eight inches beyond the last bit of black seen inside infected branches, sanitizing pruners between each cut, followed by treatment with Copper Fungicide.
