PLEASE read and share - it might save a life!
Thanks to everyone who liked yesterday's post! I've spent the weekend recuperating from my near-poisoning due to Ted Leever (newfinishtubs.com - 214-960-9550) and his dangerous business practices. I decided to put my chemistry degree to work and do some investigating. What I found is alarming.
Mr. Leever's website suggests that he is using products from hawklabs.com ( it doesn't matter who manufactures the paint - they are all based on the same chemistry) under the brand name of Glas-Tech or Green-Tech coatings. Believe me, there is nothing "green" about these paint systems!
These paints are industrial-grade auto and aviation finishes. They are strong, durable, and incredibly TOXIC! They are meant to be applied in a paint booth with industrial-grade air filtration systems - not in a home with a simple 2400cfm fan for exhaust. Look up "catalyzed enamel primer" and "catalyzed acrylic urethane" for more info.
Chemists like myself know to look for a Materials Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS. The ones for the products Mr. Leever appears to be using contain delightful phrases such as :
Category 2 carcinogenicity
Highly flammable liquid and v***r
Causes serious eye irritation
Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilating, and lighting equipment
Inhalation- move to fresh air. Seek immediate medical attention!
How is it legal for guys like Ted to spray this poison in your home, you ask? Here's what Hawk Research Lab,LLC says in its MSDS for Green-Tech Custom (tub) Color, dated 10/28/2016 :
"It is essential that the user evaluate and determine whether the product is suitable and appropriate for a particular use and intended application, and complies with all local applicable laws, regulations, standards, and guidance."
In other words - We'll sell you this poison, what you do with it is your business! So how about it, Ted Leever? Which products do you use? Do you use explosion-proof ventilation system? Are you licensed to spray hazardous materials? And do you warn your customers of the potential dangers that you might cause?
Feel free to call and debate me if you wish!
