The smooth finish. The clean color. The final install.

What they don’t always see is everything that happens before that point.

The sanding, prep work, spraying, and attention to detail that goes into getting a finish that actually looks clean and holds up long term.

Some color combinations just work without trying too hard.

For this bathroom, we paired Benjamin Moore Alabaster on the walls with Sherwin Williams Gauntlet Gray on the vanity and mirror frame.

The Alabaster keeps the space feeling soft, warm, and open without looking too stark or bright. Then the Gauntlet Gray adds contrast and depth in a way that still feels clean and timeless.

Bathrooms usually don’t need a huge amount of color to make an impact. Sometimes it’s just finding the right balance between light and dark tones so the space feels finished without feeling busy.

This combo ended up doing exactly that.

Most people think a high-end paint job comes down to the color.

But honestly, that’s usually the easy part.

What actually makes a home look finished is everything happening before and during the painting process. The prep work. The attention to detail. The finish selection. The clean lines. The consistency from room to room.

Everyone loves the reveal, but this is where the real work happens.

The middle stages of a project usually aren’t the glamorous part. It’s the coordination, the prep, the touch-ups, the protection work, and all the details that most people never notice once the project is finished.

These are a few progress shots from the Varnum Building in downtown Grand Rapids while work is still underway.

Commercial projects always have a lot of moving pieces behind the scenes, especially in active buildings where timing, communication, and keeping things organized matter just as much as the final finish.

If you looked through our camera roll, this is what you’d find.

Not just finished projects, but pieces of a lot of different jobs over time.

A room getting prepped before anything starts.
A space halfway through where it doesn’t quite make sense yet.
And then those moments where it finally starts to come together.

All of these are from different points over the past year or two, but they all tell the same story.

Most of the work happens in these in-between stages. It’s not always the part people notice, but it’s what makes the final result turn out the way it should.

After doing this for 30+ years, that’s the part we’ve learned to respect the most. The process behind it.

A pantry doesn’t have to be just storage.

When it’s designed with a little intention, it can become one of the most finished-looking spaces in the home.

This one pairs Benjamin Moore Hale Navy cabinetry with warm white oak floating shelves, a butcher block countertop, and soft gold hardware and lighting.

The contrast is what makes it work.

The deep navy brings structure and depth, while the natural wood tones and warm metals keep it from feeling too heavy or closed in. It ends up feeling balanced — clean, functional, but still warm and lived in.

It’s a good reminder that even smaller spaces like pantries can carry just as much design impact as the main rooms in a home when the details are done right.
