I came across this vivid example of a decaying oak trunk! White rot (mostly) has broken down the lignin leaving behind the spongy tissue. You can also see the rays and xylem vessels, tiny perforation tunnels that transported water.

Had a unique opportunity to inspect the inside of a failed red oak trunk after old support cables snapped. It appears that the blue/black streaking results from a chemical reaction of the tannins and metal possibly leading to secondary fungal infection. My guess is the limb failed first causing shock load on the cables.
