AI is moving fast in white-collar fields — drafting legal documents, diagnosing medical images, coding, giving therapy-like support. But when it comes to physical trades like plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and concrete work, we’re dealing with real-world variability — and that’s way harder to automate.

Why the trades are hard to replace:
Unstructured environments: A crawlspace under a 1950s house in Texas doesn’t look or behave like a Manhattan high-rise utility shaft.

Fine motor skills: Robots can weld on an assembly line with precision, but try running wire through a wall without tearing up drywall? That’s finesse.

Problem-solving in real time: Tradespeople adapt to surprises constantly — corroded pipes, mislabeled breakers, sloped slabs. AI struggles with “unknown unknowns.”

Tool use and improvisation: Trades involve an evolving set of tools, hand-skills, and intuitive physics. Training robots for every possible scenario is absurdly complex.

So when?
You might see partial robotic helpers in the 2030s — think exoskeletons, pipe-threading bots, drywall lifters, or robotic trowels that prep a slab. But fully autonomous, multi-skill robots that can handle the entire jobsite without human oversight? You're probably looking at 2040s–2050s, if not later. And even then, human tradespeople will still be supervising, fixing, or adapting those systems for a long time.

Bottom line: If you’ve mastered the trades, especially the high-detail kind, you're in a line of work that's resilient — and honestly, only getting more respected as automation makes true craftsmanship rarer.

We are a little sad that we will be grinding to show aggregate on these floors after all - they are so pretty with the cream intact!

I was in Berkeley this weekend to watch Cal beat Stanford (go Bears!) and like a typical concrete flooring nerd I found myself stealing photos of the floor at the stadium.

The aggregate exposure is super inconsistent. That’s totally within spec, but I could imagine some weeping and gnashing of teeth if expectations were not set in writing and referred back to.

We add value to projects not only by doing world-class work, but by helping manage the psychology of the end users. From our vans, to our uniforms, to our craftspeople's ability to communicate, it's all orchestrated to be world-class

It's been a few years since we installed this floor, but it's still my favorite use of heavy stencils. Black acid stain followed by a gelled-acid stencil means no matter what happens to the building, that floor looks the same!
