The photos of the angel carving in Barre granite from a few weeks ago show it quite far from finished. I can’t say that it’s truly finished now, because there is more that could be done. But it certainly seems done to everyone else.

This is certainly not an original design, but as every carver is asked to remake this, the details are unique and the carving is an artifact that records the abilities and vision of the carver at the time.

This needs a few more weeks to finish; and as I work on it here and there, I see occasionally something to change a little in the face. In general, I’m quite happy with this face.

Five years ago, I carved this nine foot figure in seven inch relief. I had to get it done before going south for the winter. Four and a half weeks! Stan said it was impossible.

I have made six granite birdbaths. This is the latest - and maybe, the last. I would like to make a few more.
This one is of light gray Barre granite. The bowl and pedestal are kept centered by a short pin of stainless steel sealed in the pedestal. There is no reason to doubt that this birdbath will be very much the same thousands of years from now. Only an accident or vandalism (or salt) can hurt it.
Natural conditions like sun, rain, freezing won’t hurt it.

Just finished this life-size full-round sculpture in Barre granite for Rock of Ages/ Lough Memorials. It is all still quite dirty and dust is covering the shoes. I hope to get some photos after it’s cleaned up - and even after it is set somewhere in Maryland.

This series shows the carving process. (The stone is covered with a stencil that was used to sandblast the floral design and letters, etc. The yellow film is part of the stencil underneath the rubber.)
Cuts are made with a small diamond saw on an angle grinder. Then chunks are broken out with hand-point and hammer. Pneumatic tools pulverize to create basic planes.
Toothed chisels shape and delineate the carving.

This bas-relief of Cupid is 18” x 14” x 1.25” deep in pink granite ; part of a mausoleum, at Rock of Ages manufacturing plant in Graniteville, Vermont. The leaves are laurel. The background is finished with a toothed broad chisel.
