On April 11, 1974, North Carolina took a bold step to protect one of its greatest assets—
our coast—by establishing the Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA).
Today, 52 years later, CAMA continues to guide how we manage development, protect
natural resources, and support resilient coastal communities.
From permitting and planning to public access and habitat protection, this work helps
ensure our coast remains a place where people, nature, and economies thrive—today and
for generations to come.
Here’s to 52 years of protecting what makes North Carolina’s coast special.
