Give your garden soil something productive to do this summer.

Summer Soil Builder Mix is a warm-season cover crop blend made for open garden beds, vegetable rotations, and growing spaces that need a little renewal between plantings. With buckwheat, cowpeas, sunn h**p, and soybeans, this mix helps keep bare soil covered while supporting natural fertility, organic matter, w**d competition, and beneficial insect activity.

Itโ€™s especially useful after spring crops come out and before fall planting begins. Instead of leaving a bed empty through the heat, plant a quick-growing cover crop that works above and below the soil.

๐ŸŒฑ Helps add organic matter
๐ŸŒฑ Supports nitrogen fixation
๐ŸŒฑ Covers bare soil during summer
๐ŸŒฑ Competes with w**ds
๐ŸŒฑ Attracts beneficial insects when allowed to flower
๐ŸŒฑ Great for garden beds, small farms, and crop rotations

Our Memorial Day Sale ends Monday, so itโ€™s a great time to stock up on Summer Soil Builder Mix and other garden essentials while the sale is still running.

Jute netting is a simple, natural way to support cucumbers, pole beans, peas, flowering vines, and other lightweight climbing crops. Set it up between sturdy stakes, bamboo poles, T-posts, or a simple frame, then plant along the base and gently guide young vines onto the netting as they grow.

Growing vertically helps save space, improves airflow, keeps foliage and fruit cleaner, and makes harvesting much easier. It is especially useful as garden beds transition from early-season planting into summer growth, when vines can quickly sprawl into pathways or crowd neighboring crops.

Jute is made from natural plant fibers, making it a more sustainable alternative to plastic trellis netting. At the end of the season, untreated jute can often be composted or worked back into the soil.

In May, fruit trees often set more fruit than they can realistically mature.

Thinning young fruit may feel hard at first, but it helps the tree put its energy into fewer, better fruits instead of spreading resources too thin.

A good general rule: leave one fruit every 6โ€“8 inches along the branch. 4-6 inches for smaller varieties. Remove damaged, crowded, misshapen, or insect-stung fruit first, and keep the healthiest, best-positioned fruit.

Thinning now can help support:

๐ŸŽ Larger fruit
๐Ÿ‘ Better airflow
๐Ÿ Stronger branches
๐Ÿ More even ripening
๐Ÿ‘ A healthier tree for future harvests

Think of it as quality control for your fruit tree. A lighter crop in spring can lead to a much more rewarding harvest later in the season!

Warm-season cover crops are one of the simplest ways to build soil between plantings. Each seed option brings something different to the field or garden:

โ€ข Buckwheat establishes quickly and helps cover bare soil fast
โ€ข Cowpeas fix nitrogen and support summer soil building
โ€ข Sorghum-sudangrass produces high biomass for w**d suppression and protection

Used in rotation, these crops help improve soil structure, support microbial life, and reduce pressure from w**ds and pests over time. There isnโ€™t a single โ€œbestโ€ cover crop โ€” the goal is to match the right plant to your timing, soil, and system.

๐Ÿ… Tip of the Week: Feed Tomatoes for Fruit, Not Just Leaves

Tomatoes are heavy feeders, but more fertilizer is not always better. In late April and early May, many tomato plants are settling into the garden and beginning the transition from early growth into flowering.

This is the time to feed with balance in mind. Too much nitrogen can encourage big, leafy plants that look impressive but may produce fewer flowers and less fruit. Instead, focus on steady nutrition that supports strong roots, healthy blooms, and summer tomato production.

A simple way to think about it:

๐Ÿ… Early season: build the plant.
๐Ÿ… Flowering season: support the harvest.
๐Ÿ… Summer season: keep it steady.

Pair smart feeding with consistent watering, healthy soil, and good support, and your tomatoes will be better prepared to carry a strong summer crop.

Jerusalem artichokes have one of the best garden stories.

They are not from Jerusalem, and they are not true artichokes. This North American sunflower relative earned its curious name through history, travel, and a likely twist on the Italian word girasole, meaning sunflower.

In the garden, they are bold, cheerful, and wonderfully productive. Tall stems bring sunny yellow blooms late in the season, while underground they form crisp, edible tubers with a sweet, nutty flavor.

Gardeners love them because they are easy to grow, pollinator-friendly, and return reliably year after year. Give them room to spread, and theyโ€™ll reward you with old-fashioned abundance.

A little history, a little mystery, and a whole lot of garden charm. ๐ŸŒป

Tip of the Week: Donโ€™t Overlook Potassium

One of the best ways to support strong, steady plant growth is to make sure your fertilizer program includes enough potassium. This important nutrient helps plants build sturdy stems, maintain healthy foliage, regulate water more efficiently, and better handle the stress that comes with active spring and summer growth.

Potassium also plays an important role later in the season as plants move into flowering and fruiting, helping support overall plant quality and productivity.

If your garden is growing quickly right now, this is a great time to take a closer look at how you are feeding your plants. A little attention to potassium now can help set the stage for stronger performance in the weeks ahead.

Not all peppers bring the same kind of heat, and that is where SHU comes in. SHU stands for Scoville Heat Units, the scale used to measure how hot a pepper tastes. At 0 SHU, sweet peppers like bells and bananas bring plenty of flavor without any heat. Step up to a jalapeรฑo at around 5,000โ€“15,000 SHU, and you get a noticeable kick that still works for many fresh dishes. Cayenne turns up the heat even more at 25,000โ€“50,000 SHU, while habaneros can soar from 100,000โ€“350,000 SHU for growers who like serious spice.

One of the fun things about growing peppers at home is choosing your own heat range. You can plant a few mild varieties for fresh eating, add some medium heat for salsas and grilling, or grow the fiery types if you like a pepper with real intensity. However hot you want your harvest to be, peppers are one of the most rewarding warm-season crops to grow.
